Come on, there is reliable, recent research that shows that this is the best possible recipe for another divorce!An approach that is proven to be far more effective for conserving remarriages and ultimately more stable for the children is for the couple to focus on becoming a strong team and to parent from that team. Remarriage experts agree that guilting stepparents into accepting "second place" is not the way to make a successful stepfamily.Susan Wisdom's "Stepcoupling" is a far better, more engaging and more helpful book for struggling stepfamilies.

How can one as a young girl be a reader and writer of pornography and we find her in nearly pristine innocence? Oh, Maud. How can one be raised and trained by thieves and be clueless and loveable? Oh, I get it: Susan is the answer. I knew the plot was going to have twists, even saw the little hints about what those were, and somehow I was still surprised and pleased at how the twists spun the tale. This is one tale with a wealth of the sleight of hand you would expect with a title like that.

Fingersmith, read as a Victorian Era suspense/thriller, is very good. I couldn't stop reading it. It has all of the best elements of suspense, old creepy mansions, thieves and cutthroats, and madhouses. Waters does a great job painting a picture of the underbelly of London--and also deftly illustrates the segregation between lower and upper classes, thoroughly delineating the divide through even the use of accents. I also like that there are subjects, like Victorian pornography, that defy the general conception of Victorians as buttoned-up. I think, however, that the characters suffer a little from all these myriad elements being thrust into the book. There is a lack of characterization, particularly for Maud, and the romance elements of the book seem forced, especially when compared to her other works. All in all, I really enjoyed it, but I don't know if I'd ever read it again.

Beautifully written! Fingersmith has more twists and turns than the modern day thrillers that are my favorite genre. I love a novel with an unpredictable plot. If I can figure out the ending, I classify the text as formulaic and therefore unsatisfying. Fingersmith keeps the reader guessing and keeps the reader surprised. This is fiction, but yet it seems so realistic as it portrays betrayal, love, and trickery at its best! Wow! I would also classify this as great historical fiction. I plan to read more of Sarah Waters's work. This novel is more satisfying in plot development than one of her later works, The Paying Guests. (less)

I first read this book in 2004, at a time when I was making a transition in my life from being a research scientist to a writer. I remember so clearly reading that first page. By the time I got to the words at the end of the first paragraph, I was hooked. Here is that first paragraph:"My name, in those days, was Susan Trinder. People called me Sue. I know the year I was born in, but for many years I did not know the date, and took my birthday at Christmas. I believe I am an orphan. My mother I know is daed. But I never saw her, she was nothing to me. I was Mrs. Sucksby's child if I was anyone's; and for father I had Mr. Ibbs, who kept the locksmith's shop, at Lant Street, in the Borough, near to the Thames."In 89 words, Sarah Waters has given us such a complete feel for the world she is creating, the Victorian era of the early 1860s, that by the time one gets to the end of that first paragraph, one knows one is in the hands of a master.This novel has everything, sophisticated characterization, wonderful descriptions, heartbreak, treachery and great plot twists. Yes, one can see that Ms. Water's literary ancestors are Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins and the Bronte sisters, but she brings a fresh new voice, a sly modern take, on the preoccupations of those novelists. Five stars.

The first part of the book had all I love but then you have a twist and the book turns to be completely different from what you had expected that you don't any longer know what the story is about! I liked the book because it is well written and you accept to read something different from what you expected. First a book about a young man and a young girl who will trick a rich heir to take all her fortune and then you have to read the book to.found out what happens.

Sarah Waters at her best! Visual imagery is something this author is wonderful at and she excels in this one. I personally believe this is her best. The characters are deep and intense and I liked them all, even Gentleman. Well done. The plot thickens the further one reads. The twists and turns throughout the book will keep every reader guessing. Sarah Waters is great for a reason and this book proves it over and over. If you have not read her work this is a great one to start with. Highly recommended.

This book represents many of the best qualities of the fiction genre. It is a complex, richly visualized, portrait of Victorian era England. But, more than that, it transcends the normal bounds of a period piece by moving further afield than drawing rooms and country estates, and explores niches of the era that the layman wouldn’t know exist. The plot contains just the right amount of intrigue to be surprising but not unwieldy or jarring. Overall a beautifully crafted story, and one I could imagine revisiting again.

It recommends healthy eating patterns like the king-prince-pauper meals from breakfast to dinner. It presents simple exercises like jumping on trampolines and walking, and the mental preparation to embark on a decisive journey to weight management. The list goes on. UPSIDE 1. excellent ladies. i weighed 300 lbs. have tried every diet new and old this book is an investment in your life. I have lost 25 lbs so far and still losing and Not hungry. Strongly suggest this book instead of wasting money on gimmicks and caffiene pills.

Book is greatly informative on the matter of slow metabolism. The advice given to conquer it is excellent. The diet is not just a diet but a lifestyle. Recommend to people that are having a hard time loosing weight. Since I started reading the book I have seen a weight loss of 2 lbs per week. Better yet I am slimming down. Great book! Great lifestyle.

A great book with lots of very good information. Best of all the author explained things so clearly and simply that I am understanding much more simply how the body and my metabolism works and what I can do to have my body run better. Thank you.

Too many product purchase suggestions. I also feel like he makes bold statements and generalizations without providing evidence to back him up. Like he says that pure water once dranken goes straight into your bloodstream while juices and other drinks with sugar go into your stomach with food. But why? And what about stuff like tap water? I just feel like he is unspecific and speaks as if he knows everything about this subject.

Awesome and effective information. My mom already lost 10 pounds without too much effort, she just followed the advise from Frank Suares.

This book was a great help to me in understanding how different foods are influencing my weight- consistent with most of what Drs tell me, but with better explanation.

If you are willing to do the work, try some new things (and/or stop doing some others), then this book will provide a wealth of ideas and information to help you on your journey.The book is broken into 3 sections based on their key principles of:* The Growth Equation (stress + rest = growth)* Priming - the power of developing optimal routines and designing your day* Purpose - to keep you focused and motivatedThere are many valuable ideas and insights in each chapter. My favorite feature of the book are the "performance practices" - these are callout boxes that distill key ideas into actions you can take right away to start to improve.I learned and was challenged throughout the book - my 2 favorite chapters are:* minimalist to be a maximalist - life is about choices and it is important to be highly focused in some areas and minimize the decisions and attention we give to other areas. I loved this quote from Michael Joyner - "You need to say no to a lot of things so that when it is time to say yes, you can do so with all your energy." The key is to be intentional and to make habits for the areas that are needed but not part of your focus.* transcend your "self". This chapter is on purpose and it challenges a lot of my thinking. I plan to work with some of the ideas mentioned here (and do the exercise on purpose that they recommend) and see how this works for me. I want to understand both the theory and practice in this area so I will be reading some of the works mentioned here in the near future. I am a strong believer in purpose but not "self-transcendence" and that is what I want to understand more.The book is truly action oriented and I have already starting using the ideas as I read the book over the last few days. I recommend the book highly and for those who are coaches or leaders, I would encourage you to share the ideas with your teams (and encourage them to read the book).Two additional thoughts - any critical thinker will find areas they disagree with in most books and this is no exception. The power of this book is that it is encouraging me to explore those areas in more detail. Additionally, most of us know that psychology and the social sciences have been plagued with a "reproduce-ability crisis" with many studies. While this work is very evidence based, it is important to remember that these ideas and findings will continue to evolve and change. For those with a growth mindset, that is just another piece of the puzzle in long-term learning and growth.I hope this book gets a wide audience and helps others in their personnel success and flourishing.

I purchased this book because I like to keep abreast of books athletes I work with are likely to read (I'm a sport psychologist). I anticipated that this would be helpful in my work with them (it TOTALLY will be), but what I never intended was that it would be helpful for me, too. Given my background in sport and clinical psychology, it's a rare book that speaks to me on such a deep level. The last author that had this impact on me was Adam Grant, so we're talking "Adam Grant-level impact" here!I was familiar with 80% of the research the authors discussed, and they do a fantastic job of accurately discussing the findings in a practical manner. What I love most about this book is that the authors present the findings in such a way that it really begs the reader to question why he/she is approaching life, training, etc. in the manner they are and what can be done to IMPROVE that equation. They recognize this looks different for every athlete and challenge the reader to think about what the "stress + rest" equation looks like in his/her own life. They offer ideas of how to change things, but in a way that is still very individualized (i.e., not formulaic).This book is fantastic for anyone who wants to understand him/herself better or wants to encourage those with whom they work (e.g., athletes) to do the same. Reading this helped me take an HONEST look at my own life and tweak things to continue my own peak performance path. I really cannot say enough good things about this book, but to appreciate this, you'll need to read it for yourself!The only "negative" (and it's really not a negative, just a preference) is the "activity" the authors recommend completing at the end of the book because I REALLY do not like those activities in books. However, the authors comment that they, too, do not like these activities, which decreased my resistance :) I see value in the activity and intend to complete it for several domains of my life.

I have absolutely LOVED reading this book about maximizing your potential self. As a runner, I find Steve extremely relatable, however, I am impressed with how relatable all the stories in the book are regardless of your passion (athletic or not). This book helped me obtain clear insight into my personal goals and how to keep your "eyes on the prize" while staying driven and focused in a sustainable way. This book is an extremely easy read and well written. I would definitely recommend this book to help you center yourself around your passions and goals. Well done!

Just finished. Excellent job at taking potentially complex scientific principles, concepts, and ideas and presenting them in simple, not simplistic, ways so the reader can readily understand how to apply them. Enjoyable read from start to finish, loaded with practical ideas no matter your age, gender, passions, or pursuits! But, it is not a one-size-fits-all magic formula. You'll learn to work within your strengths & weaknesses, passions and personality. It is a flexible framework. As an old guy in his 45th year of running and having gone through the PhD grind over 20 years ago, this book would have saved me a lot of trial-and-error in my own pursuits. Read and apply!
