I had read the first two novels out of sequence. This was actually my fourth. I found I liked Ms. Reich’s books and decided to start reading in order. Being a forensic anthropologist by profession, her books are full of scientific details. By bringing her professional career into her novels, Ms. Reichs brings interesting forensics to life.Dr. Tempe Brennan splits her time between the Southern U.S. and Quebec. She is so focused on her work and daughter, her personal life has taken a back seat. It’s interesting to see if something will evolve between her and a fellow colleague. The story revolves mainly around serial killing which seems to center around a zealous cult. If true, why? There’s a secondary forensic story which is woven around a characterwho died in the late 1800’s. I would have liked this secondary story shortened or eliminated and the connection to the primary woven differently. I didn’t find the connection that strong. It would have shortened the novel a bit which would have been fine.At any rate, the author provides a nicely written novel, complete with enough twists to make it worth your while.

I have decided to read the Tempe Brennan novels in order. The first in the series, "Deja Dead" was quite disappointing. Even after getting over the VAST differences between the TV and novel versions of Tempe, the book was unevenly written, tedious through the middle third, and predictable all the way to the end (almost from the start). In this book, Ms. Reichs seems to be hitting her stride.Although Tempe is still excessively emotional for my taste, in this book she "plays by the rules" and doesn't go off and do the "stupid" stuff that she does in the first book. Additionally, the character of Detective Andy Ryan (the "Booth" character, for "Bones" fans) is much more fleshed out, and the love/hate relationship between them begins. There is a lot more forensic science in this book, and much less tedious "case work". We are introduced to an entemologist and social psychologist who add their expertise to the scientific mix. The story is fast-paced throughout, and I was unable to put it down for the last third of the book.I DO have agree with some other reviewers that there is a bit too much coincidence driving the story line. There are three independent story lines: a house fire in Montreal, bodies discovered in North Carolina, and a visit by her sister that have a little too much in common to be completely believable (I'm being intentionally vague so as not to ruin the story for those who have not read it). Everything ties up nicely (if a bit predictably) in the end, but a lot of that is because of Tempe being in just the right place at the just right time. There is a completely independent "historical" mystery running parallel to the primary story that is interesting in it's own way, but ultimately not really needed. All and all, though, this was a very enjoyable read, and I am anxiously looking forward to the next book in the series.

I really enjoyed this books. Her mysteries are a fun read, even if there are too many coincidences. This book was especially compelling to me because the cult is based on a real cult. And unbeknownst to me, I discovered a good friend of mine was one of the children in this cult! So this was definitely a conversation starter. Also, he didn't know it was a cult but had very bad memories of the place. We ended up doing quit a bit of research on the history of the cult and the leaders and this book was really accurate (the story was obviously made up) but a lot of the names the author used were the real names.

i starting reading these books because the sue grafton kinsey milhone books are coming to an end :(kathy reichs temperance brennan is a satisfactory replacement.... tempe is not as funny, lovable and entertaining as kinsey.tempe is ornery and stand-offish. but her obvious expertise and explanations of scientific processes is pretty cool. and the change of locales & descriptions of montreal are a nice addition.plus, how do you not love a strong, smart, courageous, independent woman. so far, a pretty fair trade off
