This book was required as part of a Masters level Organization Information Systems course. As designed, the book provides valuable insight for non-IT managers into the successful utilization of IT in business, non-profit, and government organizations. IT Strategy is written for the non-IT manager and therefore isn't needlessly bogged down with technical jargon.
My favorite book so far this year has been Amrit Tiwana’s 2017 IT Strategy for Non-IT Managers: Becoming an Engaged Contributor to Corporate IT Decisions. As an entrepreneur I think this book would help other entrepreneurs or for starters in business to learn that trying new things can be scary, but sometimes when we try, we can find things that make us happy too. I liked this book a lot. People who are interested in IT unit and Non-IT Managers will most probably be interested in reading this book. A strong and powerful book, it has a lot of information to learn about it. My favorite quote to remember “To create a competitive advantage, an IT asset must be valuable in your industry and rare among your archrivals. To sustain a competitive advantage after you have successfully created one, your archrivals must not be able to copy it (inimitable) nor achieve the same ends differently…(Tiwana, 2017. P66).†I have learned more than I can’t imagine through the last pages and upon finishing I went back and read those last pages again. This book was very well written. The book provides valuable insight for IT unit and non-IT managers into the successful understanding of IT assets, a very powerful learning tool and it gave me all the feels.I give this book 5 stars.
We were assigned this book as part of our MBA curriculum, and I must admit, having absolutely zero background in anything IT-related, I was quite intimidated before taking the class. Once I started reading the book, however, and saw the "jargon decoder" at the beginning of each chapter, I was able to navigate the class easily. This book is extremely helpful to understand the role non-IT managers play in IT Strategy as a whole. It also provided a great foundation of knowledge for IT as more than just the devices with which we interact every day. To be successful and to be sustainably competitive, a firm MUST involve and respect the input of non-IT managers. Again, this book was a great, easily consumable read and incorporates a lot of modern and relatable examples.
I was FINALLY able to understand IT strategy from the concepts of this book. I was able to make suggestion to a business associate that was having some serious infrastructure issues in his company. It just made sense what was wrong. Three months ago, before reading this book, I didn't have a clue, but now I can add more value in this arena.
This book was assigned reading as part of an MBA course. I found it very applicable to my day to day operations in my current sales role. It was super easy to read, especially for an non IT person like myself. It gave me a basic IT understanding to be able to have meaningful conversations internally and externally around the topic. In addition, this book helped me realize what is doable and what is not, which really helped spark some ideas for improvements in my business unit.
I am working as a Business Development manager for the IT organisation. This book was exactly what I was looking for to understand the mind set of business and how they should approach their IT spends and get ready for another wave of new technologies. Easy to read and very engaging!
This text book was required reading for my MBA program. I appreciated the authors perspective as I am from a non-IT background. The content highlights the key characteristics of IT and how the reader can contribute to conversations to lead and guide their IT teams to pull off successful projects. It is not a complicated or cumbersome read.
The book is very well organized and very easy to read. It doesn't read like an IT manual, but rather, it is very conversational.
