I'm about to enter my 8th year teaching the most notoriously difficult age group (7th graders) and I have to say that The Only Living Boy is a WINNER on all levels. If you are looking for an action-packed graphic novel that will capture ALL kids--from the self-proclaimed anime loving nerd to the kiddo who seems allergic to every published book ever printed--David Gallaher's The Only Living Boy series is seriously a MUST have!! My 7th graders positively connected to the protagonist ("Hey, Erik's the same age as me!"), loved the ghoulish antagonist ("That looks like Frankenstein and the mad scientist cloned together!"), and had a genuinely enjoyable time analyzing the various literary elements (onomatopoeia, internal dialogue, analogy) and brilliant illustrations (zoom in, birds eye, action sequence, and on and on) throughout our graphic novel case study. When surveyed about continuing the series, 100% of students--yes, ALL kids--said they "couldn't wait" for the second volume in the series to come out!To top off a great reading experience, David Gallaher MAXIMIZED our love for the book by visiting our classroom and engaging with kids on what it means to be a creator of comics, including how to do work that makes you happy while living the life of a writer (exhibiting daily early morning routines and persistence, love of storytelling, and even sometimes having the rare chance to sing with Stan Lee!). Hands down, our students left inspired and, most importantly, ready to create their OWN characters and stories!

This is a solid book by clearly talented creators. I was attracted to this book by an essay I read online by the writer talking about the philosophies behind the comic. He explained that the hero would use empathy and understanding to try and solve problems rather than a gun. This appealed to me as a parent, always on the lookout for books for my 10-year-old son. I ordered this book and my son and I both love it. Like the best entertainment, this book can be enjoyed by kids and parents alike. Very enjoyable and exciting adventure here. I don't want to spoil the book itself, just go read it.Highly recommended. Can't wait to get the next volume!

The Only Living Boy written by David Gallaher and art by Steve Ellis is a masterpiece, in fact this a comic book that I reread and I never get tired of the adventure. Being a first time comic book reader, I was thrilled to have The Only Living Boy as my first. If it weren’t for the writing of David Gallaher and art by Steve Ellis, I never would have ventured forward to read other comic books. The Only Living Boy is a story of Erik, a young boy who has left his home and has found himself in a world he is not familiar with. This story is unique in the sense that while he is lost, he becomes found by several creatures, who want to help and protect him through this unknown world. This is a comic book that all ages will enjoy, I would not hesitate to let my pre- teen cousins read it. The most important part of this comic, is that it has a message. All good stories should have a message. This message, in my mind, is no matter what your situation is, it is necessary to try your hardest and press on. David Gallaher and Steve Ellis mesmerize and capture all audiences with both the narrative and tremendous art. This comic will be enjoyed by all and I can’t wait to read more.

I'll be honest, I got it for myself. Now I guess I have to share with my kids. Action, adventure, intrigue, everything a growing boy needs.

This book is FUN. It's approachable by readers of all levels, but everyone will find the joy in following the adventures of Erik Farrell. Much like BONE, MOUSEGUARD, SKYWARD, and TALOS, this book is something that will follow through generations -- something parents can read with kids, teachers can read with students, and any graphic novel fan can (and will) enjoy.

What a great book. Perfect for everyone, young or old. Reminds me of the cartoons I grew up on, like Masters of the Universe and ThunderCats. Add healthy doses of Planet of the Apes, Labyrinth, and The Neverending Story. Gallaher and Ellis create a world that is as deadly as it is wondrous. The Only Living Boy is a thrilling adventure, the kind we all yearned to take as a kid.

This wast first read by the author and it was really good. I loved all the characters as well as the storyline. Christian and Farren have both dealt with heartbreak in different ways, but an unexpected situation brings them together. The love that Christian has for Farren is great, but she doesn’t know how to take it. She isn’t use to a man being all about her. Christian isn’t use to a woman being as independent as Farren. I can’t wait to see how part 2 goes.

Farren & Christian Knight.....Wow! Although he was well-connected with money, before they became an item, Farren was no slouch herself. She came from humble beginnings, as did he. But both worked hard for their independence & worked to fulfill a need to never have to depend on anyone but self, although for different reasons. Eventually, Farren became a Corporate attorney, who held down 2 jobs during law school-some of while she was pregnant. The story begins with their present day lives & Farren reminiscent of how it all began, as well as, Christian at times. It was an intense, often times high-strung, & pressure filled relationship between the older businessman/"Connect" & the much younger, head strong "woman of his dreams" (that became "The Connect's Wife"). It was a good read, overall. But a few times, the past & the present made no sense. For example, the date read 1986 with Farren at the gym, blasting Beyonce'-of course, that is impossible. Lol! It's important to pay attention to the small details, just as well as the overall storyline. Sometimes the story was lost, not flowing as seamlessly. So I felt safe giving a '4' star rating was suitable. But the book is a good investment. Therefore, I am looking forward to Part 2 and seeing what happens, now that Farren has been kidnapped!

Errors were in this book and at times it was moving a little slow to me. Farren was the type of chick that was very ambitious and sought out to have a better life than the one she grew up having. It was crazy how her mom and sister treated her and felt like she had to provide certain things for them. At times Farren blew things out of proportion and went too far. Christian truly was a good guy that wanted to do whatever he had to because of the potential he saw in Farren. He seemed to have everything one could need but found himself getting his hands dirty when certain situations started arising. Courtney was crazy and I couldn't understand why she thought Greg would change for her. One meeting changed everything. Wow I didn't think Christian would do anything to hurt his marriage. It's crazy how things started to deteriorate all of a sudden. Hopefully part 2 will go in more details concerning who's trying so hard to cause trouble with Christian and Farren.

The Connect's Wife is a stand-out, well written break out novel by the talented Nako. Farren is independent and fabulous in her own right. Christian Knight appears to be a regular, successful self-made business man but lives a double life. The two meet and fall in love in unlikely circumstance with Christian just coming out of a bad relationship and Farren not searching for one because she has her sights set on bigger things. Farren falls in love with the upstanding man Christian appears to be. However, each have secrets they do not initially warn the other about. Will Farren be able to accept Christian as he truly is and deal with the good, the bad and the ugly it brings alone? Will Christian be able to overcome Farren's past and prove to her that he is her future? I guess you will have to read to find out. Trust me, Nako does not disappoint!!!!

I give the connect’s wife 5 stars. It was well written and each scene was well laid out. The back story was told all the way to the present and I loved every minute of it. I got a chance to see each main character grow. There’s a lot of action in this book along with some hot sex scenes and some real family drama. Well I’m off to read the Connect’s Wife II. OMG I've read the entire series and I'm going to givie credit where credit is due Baby your creative thinking is on one billion I ain't lying these books had my ass in the house for a couple days staying up all night getting through them.. This was a good read. I thought that it drag on and on. I have all 4 titles in my cart to see where this goes. I will be reading the 2nd installment soon. I am curious to fine out with happens to Farren and Christian. I like both characters. I think Farren is a not as naive as Christian think she is. It nice that she knows both side of reality: the street and corporate. But how far will she go to protect her man now that she has a family to raise. Like they say in the drug business: jail or the grave.

I love this story and I loved how the author kept the readers attention. I also like the way that Farren didn't just hop in the bed with him after meeting like a lot of the characters do in some of the books. I dislike Farrens family who was also looking for a handout and wanting her to do stuff for me. Don't get me wrong it's ok to help out at times but they were users. Can't wait for part 2 to this to find out what happen

About the Author

John C. Daresh is professor of educational leadership at the University of Texas at El Paso. Over the years, he has held faculty or administrative appointments at the University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University, the University of Northern Colorado, and Illinois State University. He has also worked as a consultant on high school reform and administrator professional development for universities, state departments of education, national and state professional associations, and individual schools and districts across the United States, and also in Barbados, Canada, France, Holland, Israel, Turkey, South Africa, and Taiwan. By far, the bulk of Daresh’s international service has been in the United Kingdom where he served an advisor and trainer for the School Management Task Force that developed and promoted support programs for beginning headteachers, the National College for School Leadership, the Welsh Office of Education, the North West Network for Diploma Development in Cheshire, Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Lincoln, the University of Hull, CREATE Consultancies, and literally dozens of Local Education Authorities and individual schools across England and Wales.Daresh recently completed three years of service as the lead consultant on principal mentoring programs for the Chicago Public Schools as that megadistrict was faced with the challenge of bringing in mostly inexperienced principals to serve in nearly of the school system’s elementary and high schools.

A feminist counterpart to Iron John--or, how ``a healthy woman is much like a wolf.'' Est‚s, a Jungian analyst, believes that a woman's wholeness depends on her returning to the sources of her repressed instinctual nature. To illustrate the ways of the ``wild woman,'' the author draws on myths, legends, and fairy tales from a vast and eclectic range of traditions. This collection of stories may well be the most valuable element of the book, which otherwise reads like unedited transcripts of the workshops Est‚s leads to encourage women to return to their ``feral'' roots. Each story demonstrates a particular aspect of woman's experience--relationship, creativity, anger, spirituality, etc. Est‚s finds evidence in the most diverse tales of the necessity for women to reclaim their wildness. The precise nature of this wildness is difficult to fathom, but, at best, it seems to include a genuine capacity to access feelings and to accept one's contradictions, while, at worst, it appears to amount to the kind of self-indulgence that prevailed during the ``me'' generation. Est‚s claims that her book is for every woman, ``whether you be spicy or somber, regal or roughshod''; but her underlying assumption that every woman is free to abandon what holds her back seems ignorant of social and economic realities. The author provides few concrete examples that might help women understand what she expects them to do, and her prose abounds in generalizations and oddities (``the ambitious woman...who is heartfelt toward her accomplishments'') that further undermine her credibility and her considerable scholarship. this book is my go to staple to feed my female soul. if anyone can get it right and deep it is Clarissa. to me, she is like the female version of Joseph Campbell. she totally unfolds the female archetypal characters and souls. if you want a book with meat and bones that talks about the issues of the female character and her relationships with other women ... within her family ... who betray her or abuse her, abandon her or neglect her ... and you have had that happen to you and you need a healing through profound understanding ... then get this book, read it and reread it and digest every bit of hit because there is nothing but soul food in here! thank heaven, God and angels for Clarissa. she is a national jewel and anything she creates speaks to me and i think it will speak to you as well.

This is the book I return to for wisdom and guidance, that I quote to explain life lessons to friends and grandchildren, that I understand better and differently whatever age I am when I reread it, starting at 38 up til now when I am 67. Clarissa Pinkola Estes, a Jungian analyst and storyteller with a tradition of women storytellers on both sides of her family, tells the original versions of fairy tales and folk tales from around the world and then meticulously, exquisitely exposes the deep hidden archetypal meaning hiding within. From love to anger to finding and learning to trust our wild wisdom, she covers every aspect of women's lives. I buy spare copies whenever I find them to have on hand to give out whenever I find a receptive soul.

I am still enjoying this book. The stories in it really resonates with me. I had stopped reading it for a couple of months after finishing a story when I had a break down about my life. I had started reading the book again to take my mind off of things and the next story, "The Red Shoes" touched a lot on what I am experiencing. Feeling a need to escape and get to a life that is happier/soulful. The Ugly Duckling is also one of my favorite stories in this book. The way the author takes the symbols and decode the meaning and themes of these stories is amazing. As kids hearing these fairy tales we'd never know that there was a deeper meaning to them. As adults they mean so much more.

This book could be interesting and I like the concept of it. I've heard so much about how awesome it is and a lot of people in the groups I'm in rave about this book. I decided to finally buy it without reading it first. Big mistake. I should've checked this out from the library first. I am an intelligent person, I have a bachelor's degree, and I've completed research at the graduate level beyond my years because apparently that's where my reading and writing skills are. The author's writing is impossible to follow completely because a lot of unnecessary words are added in, some of which don't add any meaning to whatever it is that she is trying to say. Just no. Check it out from the library if curious.

Years ago, I would not have given the book, or its title a second thought. But with lived experience, comes a different perspective. The clarity that it has given me is mind blowing. Dr. Estes is totally on point in her narrative and understanding of the woman archetype within...in all aspects and phases of our lives. She brings a wholeness and a healing to those of us who suffered under the yoke of 'expectations' and allows us to live free. Thus, we owe it to our daughters, granddaughters, and daughters-in-law to allow them to 'run with the wolves' and not encumber them with the 'roles' in which many of us were expected to fulfill.This is a must read for ALL women and for the men who love them. This isn't a 'fluff' read at all...it is deep and messy at times, but the narrative she paints with her words and stories connect with every woman who has yearned to be free and run with the wolves!!

This book is for all women, who struggled through life because of the pressures and pre-tailored expectations of their families, socieities, religious leaders, husbands, children, etc, and finally saw the light of the moon and could not fight the urge to howl (owwwwwwwwwwwwww).The basic concept is that everything that goes wrong in women's lives in the modern world is that they have forgotten their wild nature, that place inside their mind which still leads with an animal instict that makes women strong and with much power. The Wild Woman is between bars inside each one of us, howling and scratching her way out, demanding that she has time to create art, to heal, to protect her territory, to guide, to give life, to mourne, to make love, to laugh scandelously with no shame, to live with no boundries, to teach, to carry wisdom, and to trust her intuition and instincts.Ladies, go find your inner animal and live free... following but the laws of the wild...

Couldn’t get past the first chapter. I’m not sure if I just lost my attention span or have gotten dumber over the years, but, based on the other 1 and 2 star reviews, I’m thinking that the writing is just terrible. I felt like I was trying to read the Bible, if the Bible was written in the style of Alice in Wonderland. So many unnecessary words and long sentences. Pass.

Excellent and inspiring, this book has come to me at a time when parents are ageing and father descending into dementia. This book is about words, however after reading it I have none, speechless really. Maybe it's the timing, but this was the most remarkable and important read for me. There was something of an other worldly dimension hovering between the lines, quite ineffable really. I am somehow different, better, for this reading experience. It seems a most pleasing shift of both paradigm and perspective occurred on my journey thru these pages. Wonderful. Don't miss this opportunity...

My husband and I were both sceptics until we lost our 27 year old daughter to death almost 7 years ago. As far as we could remember, we’d never experienced an encounter with the divine. Miraculous things began to happen immediately after her passing and these little ‘gestures’ gave us so much hope and helped us to survive an unsurvivable situation. This book, written so beautifully and compassionately, has expanded my faith even more that we come from something wonderful and to that we’ll return. It also reminded me of one of my mother’s last statements after living with Schizophrenia and attempting suicide many times over 30 years. Out of the blue she said ‘God says he’s getting ready to do something wonderful for me’ and she died the next morning from cardiac arrest at the age of 51. My dad is almost 80 years old and I know he has concerns about the transition. I’ve sent this book to him and I know he’ll love it. He hopes to be able to ‘fly through the universe and visit every star’. I am so thankful to Lisa Smartt for this gift.

I enjoyed this book. In 1975 when I lost my mom the only book available was On Death And Dying by Elizabeth Kubler Ross. This small book repeats itself in several chapters but was informative. I think I was fortunate to find Kubler Ross’ book and it was way ahead of its time. Very informative on stages of dying.

This book goes deep into understanding the language of the dying. In my opinion it also is the language of love. Lisa Smartt's book offers us a groundbreaking and comforting glimpse into the mystery of the other side. Her book can bring you peace.

About the Author

Dr. Maurice Zucrow, who was employed as an engineering technical assistant to the Executive Vice President of Aerojet Engineering Company in Pasadena, California. Aerojet was one of the pioneering companies in the field of rocket propulsion systems and was organized in 1942 by Theodore Von Kármán with such future luminaries as Martin Summerfield and Frank Malina on the staff as Vice Presidents. An offer was extended to Dr. Zucrow in April 1946 of a position of Professor of Gas Turbines and Jet Propulsion in the Schools of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering. Dr. Zucrow accepted the offer and joined the Purdue University Staff in September 1946. Professor Zucrow immediately set about setting up a course in jet propulsion and published his groundbreaking text entitled Principles of Jet Propulsion and Gas Turbines.

If you don't already have Zucrow's Gas Dynamics, then perhaps you should. Excellent, lucid read. Every equation is derived, which is most helpful. Chapter 4 is especially interesting (1D isentropic flow with area change), My only "complaint," if you could consider it so, is that the treatment for Mass Addition in Chapter 9 was far too brief. It is akin to the "ballistic element method" used in some preliminary solid propellant rocket motor design codes such as SPP. Expansion on that topic would be welcomed, and perhaps even a brief treatment about the serious problem of slot flow and vena contracta (mentioned on one page only). Even though that is a 2D/3D problem, it is not even mentioned in Gas Dynamics Volume 2. A great read... Buy This Book!
