A great quick read that cuts to the meat very succinctly. Gene Simmons may rub some the wrong way, but he is a master of controlling not only his image but his business environment as well. This is how a poor child from Israel rose to the heights of music and business by taking and using his power.Simmons walks the reader through his core philosophies of hard work and confidence while presenting unique social and political points of view, all while giving you calls to action.You don't need to be a KISS fan to enjoy and benefit from this book, in fact, Simmons only uses KISS stories to demonstrate his philosophies in action.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to light a bit of a fire under themselves and get their life moving in a higher gear.
I read people I admire, whom I wish to understand. Gene Simmons was not someone I -thought- I would like to know...I couldn't have been more wrong. His writings are clear, concise, and directly address opportunities and problems, giving one much to consider with respect to integrity and moral action on the road to becoming a powerful person.Like advice from a loving but stern father, Gene speaks truth on what the world expects from us, and how our reaction to those expectations can accelerate or exclude us towards becoming more useful, and more powerful people. Power takes commitment of course, but so many more ingredients, listed here, are absolutely essential to rise and wield effective power and authority. Without judgement, he explains how our choices predispose likely outcomes, giving entertaining examples and more of his personal brand of advice. Lots of advice. Good advice.Making personal decisions amongst the many 'grey' areas of culture, workplace, political and social situations can lead us to becoming strongly biased against our own success. Hearing how powerful people make decisions in these scenarios, and how tactics and strategy in choosing how to live is an excellent reference without going thru the pain ourselves. This book is not PC. It's an honest assessment of power structures within many aspects of life, and a guide to help us understand cause and effect along our journey from any point to any destination. I bought copies for my friends and family, but wouldn't necessarily want children under 16 to read it entirely, it's just too honest!
My teen age son (14) loves music and I thought this might be a good book for him to read in regards to his future plans. However I wanted to read it first to make sure that the language and content was clean. Aside from a few (s*&% words and F*@5 words from a quote) the book is overly clean and easy for a teen ager to read.I also bought this book because I listened to the recorded introduction by Simmons himself and loved his execution and the retelling of his beloved mother escaping the Nazis, moving to Israel and the story of her arriving in the US and her feelings for America. This and the chapter on David Grohl is written with true sincerity. The rest of the book is the authors short justification for selling "grotesque" to teen age American youth.He concludes with the message, "Be a psychopath with a conscience." Which would give me the opportunity to explain what a contradiction of therms is to my son and how they would cancel each other out resulting in either gibberish or meaninglessness.I would love this author, with this much talent, to write an anthology of musicians stories. He has a brilliant perspective. I would buy a clean version of this kind of anthology from Gene Simmons.As for this book. I'm going to wait another year or so before I give it to my son. Perhaps around 16.
Not too much here but decent readUnfortunately, there aren't too many big revealing secrets in this book. The simple message is, you work , work and work to get what you want. He just demonstrates this with stories. This is not what most want to hear. Most people want to hear that there is a short cut to get wealth and power. There is nothing new here that your grandmother or mother didn't tell you: work hard and keep pushing yourself. This is basically your borderline new age self help book but if you really like that type of stuff there are better books. The other thing I didn't like is the way the book is bound. It has a solid cover that is too thick and pages that are too thin almost like an old bible and the pages can be torn or damaged easily. It has a solid feel on the outside but on the inside the pages have a flimsy feel to it. Perhaps the oddest book binding I've ever seen. lol If you are looking for strategies on how he got rich or strategies on how he runs his business, there aren't too many here. The basic idea is work, work, work, work 2-3 jobs, make money, improve yourself. In a nutshell, he supposedly didn't get where he got by luck (which is what we are all hoping.. the easy answer without too much hard work.) no, he worked his ass off and he wants you to do the same thing without any shortcuts. It's basically what your mother told you, you got to work hard for what you want. lol. There is really nothing beyond that here.
