This book will teach you so much about inherited behavior that it makes you want to read more.== Spoiler Alert(beginning) ==Let me give you an example of some fascinating thing you learn : You know how most of us are keen on fatty and sugary food, well the authors explained why is that so.Let's think back to our ancestors (cave men); back then, when a hunter killed an animal (let's say a giraffe) they couldn't storage the leftovers and after a while the giraffe would spoil. So what would be the wise thing to do back then? Well the best to do would be to eat as much as you could and store the extra food as fat in your body (you know those love handles).Now let's see why we inherited this behavior; the cave men (and women) who wouldn't overeat (what today we consider a wise thing, with reason) would die if there was a shortage of food, while those who put up some fat for the winter would survive. Now guess what, who do you think we came from? Of course we came from those who survived, the overeaters.The problem we have now is that society has change in the way that you don't spend 700 cal. to bring home some food, but instead about 0.5 cal. ordering a pizza through your phone. It helps us to take a second look at our own prejudices and assumptions. It provides a useful framework for examining behaviors. We get to think for ourselves about why things are the way they are and to reach insightful conclusions.A word of warning! Once you pick up this book, you will find it almost impossible to put it down.

This book is so insightful. I have been interested in psychology for several years now, especially evolutionary, and this book ties together everything I've been learning. And it's fun and easy to read. I couldn't put it down! I first got a copy from the library and liked it so much I'm buying my own. It's funny, straight forward, intelligent without being at all preachy or pedantic. The format is inviting, the topics totally relatable, the examples perfectly highlighted by analogies (which I love). It explaines the basis for everything my friends do--as well as myself!--and gives clear explanations for where all this crazy behavior comes from. I love it.I am a psychology doctoral student, but absolutely anyone would be able to read this and appreciate it.

So, I started this reluctantly, via a Preview on the Kindle. I don't read Patterson, and adding Clinton to the cover added to my reluctance. However, the reviews were surprisingly consistent and good, so I thought I'd at least wade in, if only for amusement. Well, two days of intense reading later, and I can say that the reviews are right -- the book is consistently good, with a propulsive plot, believable characters, a good balance of detail and pacing, and some cards played at the end that make it all come together nicely. While there is a quality of reveal to it that sometimes makes it feel a little too tidy for a minute or two, the pacing keeps you moving, and it's a great, fun read.

Upfront I want to say that I am a voracious reader. I am on my Third Kindle since 2011....and I do not play games.That being said....I am choosy about what I spend money on. I have read some of James Patterson's earlier books and I did read one of President Clinton's. So when they were on Steven Colbert's show talking about this book, I thought I'd get the sample chapters. I was drawn in immediately and purchased the book. I read for enjoyment mostly, on average 4-5 hours a day. So the premise of the President is Missing is that the press - and by reporting it - the public doesn't know where the President is. The characters were very believable, and I liked the insight to the people connected to the White House. I could see the input from President Clinton. Unless you are privy to the inner workings of the Presidency and political workings, this would not have been believable. Because I watched Designated Survivor, this book came alive for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it.Forget your political leaning...this could be any party's President, but the threat is universal. So, what I'd recommend is to get the sample and see if you want to spend the money on the book. Make up your own mind, don't be swayed by a good or bad review.

This book is about an attack on the cyberspace infrastructure of the United States - the Internet. Written by James Patterson, an author well-known for his thrillers, and former President Bill Clinton, the story, in a broad brush summary, is about a massive plot to disable the US by deleting all electronic files and sending it into the “Dark Ages,” the code word for rendering the US a crippled, paralyzed, and primitive zone of chaos.A virus is discovered that will cause this chaos to occur in record time. The story revolves around trying to find the code word that will disable the virus.The President is missing is not exactly accurate, but it’s what the world believes. The President has actually decamped to a secure, secret place where he amasses a team of experts to try to stop the virus in its tracks. This is a uniquely hands-on President, it seems.The story is compelling and in our times completely believable, including discovering a traitor inside the White House. However , the President tends to deliver periodic and lengthy polemics about the state of the world, which are thinly veiled attacks on our current administration. I will say this: I’m not a fan at all if the current administration and its policies. However, I think the fictional President’s tirades are unnecessary. They add nothing to the story and in fact detract from it, which is why I give this darn good ride of a story only three stars. You can pretty much tell what part of the story James Patterson wrote and what part Bill Clinton wrote. The distinction is that obvious.Nevertheless, if one overlooks the political digressions, this is an excellent tale.

In the first few chapters, after reading the internal dialogue of the president, I turned to my Mom & said “This could only have been written by a former president...it’s just too real, & much too funny!” It’s about a President who knows of a cyberterrorist’s plan to put America in grave turmoil. He knows what the plan will do, but must keep it a secret in order to prevent mass hysteria.I could NOT put this down (with the exception of sleep, of course). The characters are incredibly well developed, & I came to like one character whose job leaves precious little to deserve my liking her.The suspense of the book made my heart race a little, which to me makes it a great read! The plot twist at the end was unexpected and seriously well written! Buy this book - you won’t regret it!!!

The book captured my attention from page one and I could not put it down. It is brilliantly and beautifully written with drama, suspense, and insight that only a few people in this world can have. I almost wish that Bill Clinton's name was not on the cover of the book because it seems that people are polarizing and politicizing the whole thing. Regardless of who wrote the book, if you love a great novel of suspense with historical context, if you are a political junkie who enjoys novels, if you like to binge on exciting drama and suspense, then you would probably enjoy reading this book. It is a thick book, over 500 pages and 100+ chapters that will keep you reading page after page, chapter after chapter. It feels solid in your hand and your lap. It will keep you entertained for hours, if not days.

1. The style. A new character enters the scene, says 1 thing, and the narrator spends 2 paragraphs of background. "I've known Bob for 25 years. We fought together in xxxx. His wife and my wife are close friends. He has a dog named Freckles." That's fine for a historical novel but not for an action/spy/thriller.2. Near the end, the main character (POTUS) makes a major speech to the country which is obviously a vehicle for the authors to make a speech to their readers about the current state of the country. So if you're looking to this as an entertaining novel, you may find parts that are inappropriate and disappointing.

I have always enjoyed Patterson and did not realize the collaboration with Clinton when I purchased the book. I got about half way through and was just bored. I may finish it just because I bought it but it is not a Patterson book.

This is a disappointing and not very useful book. First, Duhigg sets us up with his introduction about how super-productive people like Atul Gawande are and promises that he'll deliver their secrets. The book is full of anecdotes and their relation to research. There's little to no summarizing with the steps a person should take to be smarter, faster, and better. As a reference book, it's useless because you have to wade through hundreds of pages of text to find any nuggets.The clincher for me was when I got to the end and read his appendix. This was where he was supposed to tell us how he put the lessons of the book into practice as he wrote the book. It's where he was supposed to tell us how we all can manage the load of commitments we have to be as productive as Gawande, a best-selling author, a well-known surgeon, a Harvard faculty member, an advisor to the World Health Organization...But it never happened. Instead of finding out how Duhigg managed the responsibilities of work, family, and personal needs, we found out how he organized and managed to write the book. Nope. As far as I know, his family life fell apart and his co-workers hate him for shirking his duties.In short, this book could have been much better in many ways. Don't waste your money or your time.

Charles Duhigg is a good journalist (his share of a Pulitzer Prize proves that), and his book Smarter Faster Better is a good read. I enjoyed reading it. It's inspiring and insightful.But the book promises to be more than just entertainment. The title takes off the Olympic motto: Citius Altius Fortius (Faster Higher Stronger), and its cover shows a runner smartly running directly to the center of a maze. A self-help, self-improvement type of book, it promises "the secrets of being productive in life and business". That I don't think the book delivers.Why not? The book is full of stories. Anecdotes. Case studies. Whatever you want to call them. Charles Duhigg researches a lot of disparate incidents involving various people, and tries to bring them together to show us how to draw on other people's experiences to be more productive. But he fails.That's because you can pull out of anecdotes pretty much anything you want to. I can find an anecdote to support any argument I want to make. Anecdotes are like statistics. As Simpson's paradox says, often the same statistics can be used to show something and its exact opposite. The same with anecdotes.Take Charles Duhigg's use of the life of Rosa Parks in his book The Power of Habit. He says that she shows the power of social habits. He tells of how her husband said she was so social she rarely ate dinner at home, instead eating at the home of friends. That gave her the social strength to start a movement.But Susan Cain (a blurber for this book) in her book Quiet, tells the story of Rosa Parks to support her argument of the power of introverts. While extroverts tend to gain their energy in social situations, introverts typically recharge through solitude and feel drained from too much stimulation. The same person, but one author sees her as a social butterfly and another as an introvert who sought solitude.That's not to say that Charles Duhigg or Susan Cain is wrong. And I don't want to push this example too strongly. But I do think that many authors, and most TED talk speakers, depend too much on anecdote and story telling to persuade, while they would do better to just entertain. I have no problem using anecdotes to pump people up. But to try to derive secrets from them seems a step too far.Take another example, this one from this book. Charles Duhigg uses the example of the 2009 Air France Flight 447 jetliner crash in the Atlantic as an example of "cognitive tunneling" and poor mental models. In that tragic accident, the Airbus A330 plane was flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris and ran into bad weather. The plane was flying fine, but its pitot tubes apparently froze up and gave the pilots the wrong speed information. They acted on that wrong information, put the plane into a stall, and fell into the ocean.But does that anecdote unequivocally show cognitive tunneling? And can one take from that anecdote a lesson about how not to cognitively tunnel? I don't see how. I've read several other accounts of that Air France accident, and none of them blamed it on cognitive tunneling (although one did mention tunnel vision as one of many factors).The Air France accident seems to me more like what Charles Perrow described in Normal Accidents: Living With High-Risk Technologies. Just like with the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, people do not do well when their instruments lie to them about situations they cannot see with their eyes. Another account blames the Air France accident mainly on over-reliance on automated systems in the Airbus planes. (William Langewiesche's article in Vanity Fair is fascinating reading.)My point is that any anecdote can, by its nature, be interpreted in many different ways. Just like in the old fable six blind men saw six different things in an elephant. None were wrong, yet none were right.Rather than books like this one, I prefer my anecdotes in the form of biographies. When I read a good biography, or a good history, the author presents a life or a series of stories in a way that the reader can draw their own conclusions. I'm sure the author's slant comes through to some extent.But when I read a book by someone like David Halberstam or David McCullough, I usually feel as though I read a gem that provides lessons for my life. I didn't get that with this book. To me, at least, it seemed too shallow, too broad, and too pushy. Not deep, focused, and subtle.

This book is awesome. It is not for the faint of heart. This is a call to change the way we think about Christianity. It is for any Christian who seriously wants to take a look at his/her life and make the necessary changes to become a serious Christian. It makes perfect sense why we are not walking in the power of Christ who has set us free. We should be having the same experiences as the early Church, we should be healing the sick, casting out demons, and introducing people to the Savior. Funny thing is, you start talking this way and people start getting uncomfortable. I have to start asking myself why? Is it because we don't believe or could it be actually what John reveals in the book. We are set apart and we are not supposed to look like the rest of the world. Our lives should cause others to be drawn to God, to cause them to find out what they are missing and what we have that makes us different than what the world has to offer.

What is this Kryptonite? John Bevere reveals it in this book! This book is hard to put down. First, I was admittedly intrigued by the title. But after reading through the book, the book does not disappoint! It not only reveals our Kryptonite that weakens our Christian walk and destroys and weakens the powerful and amazing and abundant life that Jesus came to give us!John Bevere is an amazing author. I've read many of his works. Some of my favorites are Drawing Near, Driven by Eternity, The Bait of Satan, The Holy Spirit, Fear the Lord, and Extraordinary, the life you're meant to live. Just like his earlier works, John goes deep. And it's apparent that John loves the Lord, and lives life guided in step by the Spirit. He writes in the introduction that he writes all his books with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.This book is just an amazing read! It has many wonderful revelations to us as individual Christians and child of God, and to the Church as a whole! This book has 28 chapters in all and more than 300 pages. Its divided into 4 sections, with 7 chapters in each section. The last section is particularly edifying and profitable at a very practical level. The applications is particularly clear and powerful. The message is full of wisdom and urgency especially for our times. John writes that we may be tempted to head straight to the final section, but he recommends reading through the whole book to get the more impact from the last section! And indeed each section leads to the next section and holds the attention of the reader. It just hard to put down! I highly recommend this book ! Its one of the best of Johns books! I also recommend other of John Bevere's books as well. They are all very thought provoking, edifying, and encouraging at the same time and allows the readers the opportunity for deep self examination and to deepen our relationship with God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit!

I was seeing this book everywhere on social media and it just kept popping up so I read up on it and it sounded really good. I bought it and it didn't fall short of fantastic. I'm barely like 3 chapters in but it's amazing! If you're not a believer in Christ, God, and the Holy Spirit, I say still get it!!! This can be a life changer for both the believer and unbeliever! This book challenged me to examine myself like nothing else has lately. John has done it again! This book is most definitely a NOW word for the church causing us to confront hidden sin ( and sin we didn’t realize was sin ) but the whole purpose being to renew our intimacy with our creator and open the door to our spiritual gifts and reach out to a lost and dying world.I’ve read nearly every one of John Bevere’s books but this one is the best by far!

Once again, John Bevere has spoken the truth in love. I originally ordered 3 copies because I knew this was going to be a book I need to share. I also bought the Kindle Version for sharing thoughts on social media and so that I always have the book with me. Recently, I received the audio version which I am listening to for the second time. No regrets other than not having this book available when I was younger. I look forward to sharing this study with my men's group if we ever get through studying Driven By Eternity. John, thank you for obeying God and being faithful to His Word and leading.

I was honestly wary of reading this book, worrying if it would ever into legalistic territory but the author handles his subject with an authority, passionate and logic that made this easy to digest whilst providing much food for thought. If you are wondering why there is a gap between the Christian experience today and what has been the manifest mirac!es of the Bible, this book explains it well.

It is a good book. It helps you to examine yourself and see if there is any strongholds in your life keeping you from possessing the blessingsand promises of God... and be all He desires you to be. I haven't finished the book yet so I can not give a complete review, but so far the bookgives you a better understanding about sin, a covenant relationship. I think It helps you go on your own personal journey and find your place in God's plan for your life.

The messages in this book, again, like a bang to my head, wake me up, and strengthen me.When sin grow to its full strength, it leads to death. Pretty good introduction. Very actionable advice and tips. Nevertheless, I would only recommend it if you have read The Toyota Way, Learning to See and/or similar books on Lean beforehand. Something else to know is that this book, like the others mentioned, focus on manufacturing. You will have to translate the concepts to your domain (e.g. Software in my case)

This is an exceptional book that not only provides the reader with a deep perspective of key Toyota enablers but thoroughly explains how to use and develop the skills to create them.Any serious study of Toyota reveals that PDCA (the Deming Cycle) and the A3 reporting mechanism are at the heart of the onion. These are the tools that enabled the development of their Production System. As a friend and Toyota manager once explained, "it's their circulatory system" or how they create and transmit knowledge. These tools are as prevalent in Toyota's PD or Marketing as they are in a production unit.If you are serious about implementing "Lean" your time and money could not be better placed than in reading this book! It is well written and very useful.

Pro:+ Very, very good summary of PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act)+ Good use of references using solid, reliable sources+ Explains misconceptions of western interpreation of the word, "standard"+ Solid summary chapter at the end+ A3 building exercises for the reader is a novel approach, thumbs up+ Practical advice+ Good examples of A3s+ Appreciated the honesty glimpses of the realities of Toyota as a global, multinational company, even if they were small or only hinted at+ A decent section on the "digital" vs. "paper" debate+ Describes some elements of good or proper visuals (e.g. Tufte section on proper display of analytics)+ Changes the way I will forever ask (and give) updates on projectsCon:- By far the largest issue is the repetitious nature of the material. Chapters 3, 4, 5 could have perhaps been best presented as one with notes describing key differences. As is, I think the repetition has a tendency to hide and demphasize differences and key points.- Fig 6.2 and related description seems to have some serious issues, whether it is message, erroneous, or other I cannot yet say- Some jargon (e.g. "spinning your wheels") that will not translate easily if you are not AmericanNeutral:> 5 Whys was not deeply described and maybe borders in my opinion on an incorrect description, although in fairness to the authors this is not the focus of the book> Heavy use of "at Toyota" (which is on the cover) so if this is a turnoff, please note that "Toyota" shows up in here quite a bitBottom line: Recommended for everyone. Despite cons, easily in my top 5 lean/excellence books.

This book is really an excellent and in depth analysis of A3 thinking and the basic process that underlies it, PDCA or the Deming Model. It is a good primer to understand how to use A3 thinking and how to avoid many of the pitfalls that are typical when Americans try to emulate Japanese management practices. Personally, I'm more interested in the Strategy A3 process than the Problem Solving A3 but it all flows nicely and should help anyone interested in learning more about the process.

Explains how to communicate effectively.A must for all leaders interested in effective decision making and not checking the box decision.The key is that managers and leadership need system thinking of profound knowledge to coach their subordinates, which is rare commodity nowadays

Hardly a week goes by that I do not consult this book (I have the hard cover and Kindle versions), and certainly not a month goes by without my referring to it. It sets out the reasons A3s are useful and what they can achieve for us. And then it has clear guidelines on what to consider for the three types of A3s discussed.
