The Sustainable City, by Steven Cohen

Review

Steven Cohen shows us how the great cities of the twenty-first century can use sustainable methods to thrive economically while simultaneously providing a higher quality of life for their residents. A must read for current and future leaders in a rapidly urbanizing world. (William Eimicke, Columbia University)At the city level, the question of how to handle water resources, energy use, and transportation is not abstract but concrete. Citizens, planners, businesspeople, and policy makers can easily see the problems and how a sustainable approach would be beneficial. Steven Cohen draws on his extensive teaching and public management experience in documenting the kinds of sustainability measures that have been successful in major cities around the world, and he points to what other cities realistically can do in the future. (Michael E. Kraft, coeditor of The Oxford Handbook of U.S. Environmental Policy)For anyone looking for a cleaner and most sustainable urban lifestyle, it is required reading. One hopes this book, along with Cohen’s other works of the same vein, will line the bookshelves of city offices everywhere. (Bryan Zepp Jamieson Electric Review)

Steve Cohen gives his reader a lot to think about. The Sustainable City covers a wide range of issues and discusses more issues and ideas than most books do. Readers will get an education in many topics of sustainability in general as well as specifically in regards to cities. This definitely should be on your reading list if you are interested in getting to know the various issues that can make a city a sustainable place.FWIW, to probe further I recommend downloading (for free) and reading New York City's OneNYC (used to be called PlaNYC). As of this writing, the latest version is called "Progress Report OneNYC 2017". While this is a very worthwhile, readable and education 272 page document, I personally recommend the original 2007 PlaNYC - a 157 page document. Just Google (i.e. "PlaNYC 2007") to find either of these online. The 2007 document was / is precedent setting in its breadth and depth and even if your city is not NYC, it will have a lot of relevant ideas.Full disclosure: I know the author. He is not aware that I purchased his book (via Amazon) nor that I writing this review.

Review

“An elegy to place, history, and culture, to innocence (and ignorance) that have evolved to a macroscopic understanding of how the world works.”  —John Nichols, author, The Milagro Beanfield War“This memoir haunts me in the way that all fine and true writing does. My Town is a celebration of a woman’s fully-lived and courageous life, one not to be missed.”  —Pamela Uschuk, author, Crazy Love"Will resonate with anyone who has lived in New Mexico, anyone who came up in the 1950s, and many who did neither."  —Lucy R. Lippard, author, The Lure of the Local“Randall’s ingenuous poetry captures [a lonely woman] exploring space, shapes, light, people and coming of age experiences translated into the brail of a place unconscious of its cultural power and full of hypocrisy, hospitality, racism, and generosity.”  —Maria Varela, New Mexico community organizer"Margaret Randall's My Town is an exciting and genre-bending memoir from one of America's most prolific and socially conscious artists. Her blending of poetry, prose, and photography offers the reader multiple avenues through which to enter My Town's themes of memory and place." —Southwestern American Literature

The expression "all politics is local" means that the exertion of power and its consequences are above all not abstractions but immediate concerns where one happens to live one's life. In the case of Margaret Randall's "My Town," as well as her numerous other books, the same could be said for all poetics and all social consciousness, for Randall, who started out her writing career in downtown NYC in the late 1950s before living for over two decades in Mexico, Cuba and Nicaragua, has spent her writing career observing her various localities up close, with a compassion that matches her intelligence and her ethical engagement with others. In her memoir "My Town" she returns to Albuquerque, where she now lives , the city in which she grew up, to see what has changed in it and, in turn, in her as well. Tracing recollections through photographs, poems, and essays, she speaks of place as an extension of her being, and looks back on the 1950s Albuquerque in light of what has changed in those internal and external topographies. Highlights include an essay on the dark secrets of Lovelace Hospital, a poem on community racism and creative writing class, circa the mid 1950s, and moving essays on her relationships to her father( "Dad's Metronome"), another on a onetime love interest named Sam whose life story circles back into her own unexpectedly decades later, and Randall's tender portrait of her earliest champion, the painter Elaine de Kooning.

Queen Mary died 65 years ago. Today most people remember her as an unapproachable regal figure covered with jewels, but in her long lifetime of 85 years she interacted with countless numbers of people. She was the first British royal lady to travel extensively, roaming over much of Europe, making two long tours of India, and even reaching Australia. Born in what was for royalty limited circumstances in 1867, she married the future King George V in 1893 and became successively Duchess of York, Princess of Wales, Queen Consort, and Queen Dowager. She was the grandmother of the present Queen. After her death in 1953 Queen Mary remained remarkable in yet another way by becoming the first Queen Consort to have an official biographer appointed to write her life story. James Pope-Hennessy spent three years researching and writing what became an enormously successful biography that painted a vivid picture not only of Queen Mary's life but also of the milieu in which she moved and flourished for 85 years. As part of his research Pope-Hennessy met with a large number of men and women with whom Queen Mary had interacted, including relatives, courtiers, former servants, and in some cases ordinary men and women who had in some way had dealings with her. Pope-Hennessy kept extensive notes on his meetings with these people, in some cases writing lengthy and very vivid accounts of his discussions. Now, over forty years after Pope-Hennessy's own death in 1974, Hugo VIckers, an acclaimed royal biographer and historian in his own right, has edited these notes and accounts and made them available for everyone to enjoy. There is indeed much to enjoy in The Quest for Queen Mary. I found Pope-Hennessy's descriptions of his meetings with the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the Grand Duchess Xenia, the King and Queen of Sweden, and other royals to be amusing and sometimes wryly irreverent. Pope-Hennessy was a keen observer, and his assessments are shrewd and penetrating. Even more interesting are his descriptions of his meetings with former ladies in waiting and other courtiers like Lady Cynthia Colville, Lord Claud Hamilton, or the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, because they often spoke frankly of both the strengths and weaknesses of Queen Mary's character. And then there are the more "ordinary" people like elderly servants who remembered the Queen in her youth and who had some vivid memories to share. Pope-Hennessy and Vickers provide many interesting revelations, including the identity of the man with whom the young Princess Mary of Teck fell deeply in love but was not allowed to marry because he was not of royal blood. The Quest for Queen Mary has not yet been published in the United States, but it is well worth seeking out. Pope-Hennessy's vivid descriptions of his interviews, enhanced by Vickers' detailed footnotes and introductions, make it a book to be read and reread.

For a certain reader, "The Quest for Queen Mary" is just plain fun, to be drawn out to completion as long as possible. James Pope-Hennessy wrote the official biography of Queen Mary, widow of George V, in the late 1950s, and in the exhaustive process took candid notes that were not to be published for 50 years. His interviews and tours of royal and aristocratic residences provide insights into the (then declining) institutions of European monarchy - viewed not from an historical perspective but from a "you are there" recounting of afternoon conversations spent with the principals.Hugo Vickers, the editor, does an excellent job of stringing together three years worth of notes and reminiscences into an entertaining read. "Treacle?" Well maybe, but it also provides a very personal encounter with people who contributed to a century of history.

I paid $17.99 for a bunch of notes and interviews with obscure eurotrash royals. Does this book add to a general picture of Queen Mary? Not much. Her relatives agree that she was reserved but could be a hoot and that Princess Victoria (George V's sister) was hated by all. And the Windsors were genial hosts. And that Pope-Hennessey was a good houseguest. That's it. I read the whole thing, cover to cover, squinting at the scarce black & white photos (which are very tiny in Kindle). Much of the information has been surpassed by more current bio's of Mary. This was a $3.99 read.

I like James Pope-Hennessy's writing, I'm interested in "royals", and I think Hugo Vickers is terrific -- there just isnt that much new interesting material here. The best of JP-H's stuff was published by Peter Quennell in 1980. But if you love this corner of history, it is well worth having and reading.

When I first saw the book and the name of the author, I couldn't figure out what was going on. Pope Hennessy's biography of Queen Mary is among the greatest biographies every written. She was such a formidable person, but the array of positive observations do not seem slavish. And yet it always seemed clear to me that there was more to the story. This book recounts the notes from interviews held while he was writing the book. The anecdotes and impressions are revelatory and offer a balance to the magisterial portrait.

It assumes a general knowledge of the subject, but put this most unapproachable of royals or historical figures, in a new light. I enjoyed reading his notes about the people he interviewed, which were just as fascinating. My only criticisms - tiny, tiny photos in the Kindle version, and a "dramatic personae' might have been useful, especially when it comes to some of the minor royals.

I enjoyed it. The notes of the author of the official biographer of Queen Mary. Not a lot of juicy tidbits, because her life was not overwhelmed with juicy tidbits.

This book was rather a mixed bag. There were some interesting, even amusing stories......especially the description of the weekend stay with the Gloucesters, amiable but eccentric people....but most were just anecdotes about people now forgotten, except the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Despite this quest, Queen Mary is still somewhat of an enigmatic figure. She was extremely reserved, almost rigid, with an undying loyalty to the concept of monarchy. After reading this book, however, I plan to read the reissued biography as soon as it is available.

Mr. Stafford beautifully shares the adventures of his childhood on the Ivory Coast. His writing is engaging and descriptive. From his personal story and life experience, he gives practical suggestions of how to be a better parent, and how all of us can learn how to love and value children. I was educated in what we really need to understand about poverty, in order to make a difference in it. I loved the chapter where he recounts Bible stories where God used children to accomplish His purposes and of course that can still be true today. A wonderful book. Easy to read. I have purchased 3 more copies to share with family and friends.

This book challenges the way most Americans view children and their role in all areas of society. Through examples taken from the Bible and from lives lived more recently, Dr. Stafford shows that God considers children a vital part of our lives and churches today, and not merely as the 'leaders of tomorrow,' or the 'church of tomorrow.' Stafford grew up as a missionary's kid in a small West African village. That background gave rise to his world view. He urges us to reach a better understanding of how God sees children and offers suggested changes. You will laugh at 14-year-old Stafford's handling of a brash carnival barker. You will cry over stories of abuse. You will wish you had known the people of his village. I know I do. This is an important book. Read, enjoy, share!

heart wrenching, not only about the children he serves but his abuse at the hands of the boarding school for the missionary children. He rose above this horrific abuse and became an amazing advocate for children.

Dr. Stafford's personal style and stories will challenge you and provide a powerful, emotional experience. If you are expecting stories from Compassion International that are focused on trying to squeeze money from you, don't read this book. If you want an honest, deep look into the motivations and stories behind the motivations of a true man of God, then this is the book for you. But don't read this if you aren't willing to allow God to speak into your heart and rattle your convictions.

If you ask any successful person with integrity, "What got you where you are?" they will give you names of influential people who guided and coached them. This book is about touching lives when they are malleable. The measure of a society is seen in how it treats its weakest and most vulnerable members. These are always children. This book is about affecting the future by impacting those who are vulnerable and it is solid gold. This is not a theorist, but a man who has been hurt as a "vulnerable member" and decided to make a difference through forgiveness and action rather than revenge. It works! Many books are good- and forgotten. This one will resonate with you for years to come. If you have children, work with children, love children- read this book.It is truly a gift to be received. I've heard Wes speak and he is 100% genuine.

I read this book to increase my knowledge of how to help those who are poor - especially poor children. While this book met this goal, I was amazed to see how useful these same lessons are to my relatively affluent family and to the children that I see everyday. This book will change your vision of children - almost as radical as looking through the wrong end of a pair of binoculars. Children can seem so small when you look at them the wrong way; Wess Stafford shows us how to turn our binoculars around so we can see how large they really are.

This book challenges traditional thinking about children and brings to light the Biblical importance of not only teaching, but mentoring children.Stafford shows that this takes time together which can be forfeited while participating in segregated ministry. Great insights into the personal tragedy of child abuse, as well.

Amazing story!!!! Good narration! I think authors usually do a bad job reading their own book, but he did a fantastic job and made me cry a few times.

Well-written, well-researched and a powerful argument for the need for a federal program to support care at home for all generations, in particular for the coming "age wave" of aging boomers. With those age 65 and older reaching 16% of our population by the year 2020, we will need new public systems to support care, similar to those in countries such as Germany and Japan, where their elder populations reached 16% twenty years ahead of us in the U.S. "The Age of Dignity" is also unusual in its focus on the importance of supporting the rights and higher wages of home care workers, and in its support of generous policies for immigration, as our skyrocketing need for at-home care will require both. An easy and hopeful read.--Author, "Inside the Dementia Epidemic: A Daughter's Memoir"

This woman is a genius and a pathbreaker to a shared future of support for caregivers. Cogent argument for better government support for hired caregivers, higher wages, and paths to professional skill-building and advancement. Supports expansion of the PACE program, which keeps frail seniors at home. Building a coalition between frail elders, their adult children, and the lifesaving hired caregivers who help keep them happy at home. This is holy and relational work, and should be honored as such. She's brilliant, because she understands this can't be framed as a "workers vs. management" issue.

I’m a homecare RN.The Age of Dignity is a clarion call, pointing not just to the impending crisis of Aging America, but to the heroines and heroes who are already guiding the most vulnerable among us to safety and dignity. It is to Ai-jen Poo’s great credit that she came to the problem of caring for elderly Americans 14 years ago, before it had even occurred to most of us that the Baby Boomers were going to grow old en masse. That long-term familiarity is clearly evidenced in the wide scope of strategies she explores. Rather than pointing to a panacea, Ms. Poo knows that only a mosaic of creative and dedicated solutions will offer success in tackling what will surely be the greatest social policy challenge of the first half of this century. And even more inspiring, Ms. Poo understands that this struggle will ultimately be won not by policy, but by the women who actually devote their hearts and lives to caring, day after day, for our elderly and frail. This book, then, is not ultimately Ms. Poo’s story: it is the story of the skilled and loving women she brings so vividly to life from the pages of The Age of Dignity.

The Age of Dignity takes a refreshing look at the issues - and solutions - our aging, multi-cultural society face. Through the power of story-telling, Ai-jen Poo puts human faces on the seemingly intractable issues of long term care and caregiving in the United States. The beauty of this work is that the answers are laid out before us: connect the needs of an aging (and disabled) population with the needs of a growing workforce that cries out for basic labor rights, education and training. "Dignity" and "care" are not exclusive concepts - we all need them. Poo shows us a way to get there.

Great first book. I like that she is Asian American and involved in a critical policy intersection of labor and care for elders with disability. She shies away from what separates home care from more skilled home health and personal care, a key factor in discussions of training & skill needed and pay. Otherwise She raises the most critical issues. Good read. I have recommended to many academic researchers & wonks

It's kind of a hard slog, but so important. Having cared for my own mother and my mother-in-law as they aged (to 93 years old respectively) this is a subject that is important to me -- at age 78, with my husband 81. We all have much to learn about caring for or overseeing the care of an aging loved one. I haven't gotten too far into the book; but I hope she also deals with adult financial abuse, with which I am very familiar. I am currently preparing to testify at the criminal trial of a man who ripped off a close friend after she trusted him to be her power of attorney.

This is a very timely and important book that brings together the challenges we face in immigration, creating skilled jobs, addressing the needs of both the "sandwich" generation and the booming (and aging) Baby Boomers. Articulate, engaging and strategic, Ai-Jen Poo makes the case for a "caring economy." She skillfully uses storytelling to demonstrate where we are, what's coming, and where solutions are that can address all these personal and societal problems at the same time, in a humane, cost-effective way that provides dignity for all (the caretakers, the families who hire caretakers, and those who need care--that's pretty much ALL of us!). As she says, it's her intention to create a culture that "embraces the joys and complexities of aging, celebrates multigenerational relationships, and values care work--THE WORK THAT MAKES ALL OTHER WORK POSSIBLE."

Great book. It offers practical steps to help all Americans age with dignity. But much work needs to be done, however, that work will create millions of jobs. We must uplift the caregivers' image, salaries and conditions. Also, we must regain our inter-generational ties to make this all happen--otherwise, we shall have a fearful, perhaps, even impoverished elderly population. So we can all benefit by lifting each other up--young getting paid to support the old while the wisdom of elders can help the young with time-sharing et al. Fantastic author! She gets my vote. And I hope she's able to see her dreams come true for America! This is a 'must read' by anyone who can read! Our future is at stake without taking her book to heart.

I ordered this item because I didn't know how to identify the birds I was seeing in my neighborhood. Initially, I thought it was a bound book and I noted in another review, that it was a fold out, which is important, and should be mentioned in the description, but for me, a fold out suited just fine. You can easily find the bird you want to identify, by unfolding the book and seeing them all at once, instead of trying to thumb through a thick bird guide or index. I've lost patience trying to find birds that way, in other books I've bought, though the more complete volumes certainly have their use for detailed research. This one gives you a good starting reference and is also limited to the local birds that you might actually encounter, on a regular basis.

This is a folding "pamphlet" of the common birds in the area. We saw it at a friend's house and wanted it to keep by our back bird feeders. The birds on this are mainly what we see in the area, and the kids love being able to look through this instead of a big book that is intimidating.

This guide is laminated and easily foldable for convenience and protection from rain. I keep it by the window where I watch the bird feeders. It does not have as much information as a several hundred page bird book, but it is only intended to be a guide for quick identification. I'd like it to have some more backyard birds and not so many shore birds, but this is a personal preference, and I'm sure there are others who feel differently.

This is a great little portable field guide. It is laminated to keep it from getting crinkled or wet. This also makes it naturally fold back up in the proper way. It covers a lot of birds. I wish it showed both male and female versions for the species in which the two look different.

These pocket guides are great for getting a quick idea of what birds you might be looking at. It's difficult to look for a bird in a heftier book, but this little guide can quickly lead to the correct identification or at least give an idea as to where to start. Have used a South Carolina pocket guide extensively so decided to get this one recently for home.

Very nice fold out laminated bird guide. Illustrated listing of birds in Maryland/DC. Listed in four categories; Birds of Prey, Perching birds, Doves/woodpeckers, water and nearshore birds. The guide has a map of Maryland/DC birding hotspots. Obviously it doesn't list as much information as a bird guide book would, but if you are just looking for basic identification then this will be perfect for you.

as advertised; quick delivery

I keep it standing up unfolded at my window arm chair where I can see the birds.

Anyone who can make both the left and the right wingers angry is likely speaking truth to those in power. This book is extremely well-researched. It presents a balanced history of poverty in America and explains why both political extremes have no answer for solving the poverty program. His makes a persuasive case for why trying to raise taxes on the rich and simply handing over money to the poor will never solve the poverty problem (in the sense of eliminating poverty as opposed to alleviating its harms). Little progress has been made towards the goal of ending poverty since LBJ announced a national "War on Poverty." But he also takes conservatives to task for believing that all that is needed is hard work and following simple rules. (Donald Trump would choose not to work if he faced the marginal tax rates that many poor people face if they are making use of current government antipoverty programs). He makes a strong case that the trillions of dollars we have spent trying to win the war on poverty has merely institutionalized poverty. And unfortunately a huge bureaucracy that only exists because of poverty really has little interest in seeing poverty eliminated! What will be most challenging for readers is Tanner's prescription for truly ending poverty, which would begin with ending another sham "war" declared by another president - Nixon's "war on drugs." Here we have trillions more dollars spent with little success in stopping people from using their drug of choice. For anyone truly interested in understanding what would be required to end poverty in America. this book is a must-read. But it must be approached with an open mind, because its analysis and recommendations will be challenging to any on the right or left who already thinks they "know" all the answers. Libertarians though should take heart!

This book begins with a series of admissions that may shock some conservatives. Poverty is a real problem in this country, and for those affected it hurts. The trillions of dollars that have been plowed into the “War on Poverty” that was declared by LBJ in 1964 have alleviated poverty to some extent – even the federal government couldn’t spend that much money without getting something for it. And a good deal of history is cited to show that governments (as distinguished from churches and private charity) have been intervening to help the poor for many years, e.g., as by the English Parliament’s passage of the Poor Law in 1601.What are the causes of poverty. Does this condition simply show that some people are less capable of competing in the economy than others, or are cultural factors at work that put certain segments of the population at a disadvantage. Again, Tanner seemingly comes on down the liberal side of the argument. Racial repression is real and the rules of society were long rigged against women (yes, there have been some big changes, but single women are still more at risk of being poor than men are). So don’t bother arguing that it’s time to abolish the welfare state, because such a course would be morally bankrupt (and political suicide for conservatives).Tanner rejects the notion, however, that the government should seek to end poverty once and for all. Utopia is not an option, poverty reflects individual life choices as well as societal factors, poverty can never be fully eliminated. Also, economic growth has been the engine that permitted the United States and other developed nations to lift the majority of the population out of poverty, and we certainly don’t want to risk “killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.” It would be better to be unequally rich than equally poor.Given skyrocketing deficits and debt, it’s hard to believe that the US should spend even more on welfare programs than the $1 trillion per year (federal + state) that it is spending already.. And while one could argue that welfare for the poor is more important than entitlement programs (Social Security, Medicare, etc.) for the general population, the idea of eliminating the entitlement programs (as opposed to hopefully making them more affordable) is a nonstarter. Also, there is some merit in arguments that existing welfare programs treat the symptoms of poverty without helping the people concerned to improve their fortunes (or at least the fortunes of their children) through their own efforts. Some welfare program reforms are discussed, which hopefully will be pursued in an effort to get “more bang for the buck.” Combine the plethora of programs (some 100 or more) into a much smaller number - convert “in kind” benefits to cash benefits (giving the recipients more power to make optimal choices based on their specific circumstances) - make the welfare system more transparent and simpler to navigate. But at the end of the day, none of these ideas is likely to be a real game changer. The book moves on to a series of libertarian ideas that would attack some root causes of poverty without attempting to address the problem by spending more and more money. Criminal justice reform (at all stages, starting by criminalizing fewer offenses) – educational reform (promote more choice and competition vs. pouring more money into a monolithic public school system) – rethink laws that are driving up housing costs (especially for the poor) – find ways to permit the poor to accumulate savings (notably private accounts for the payroll taxes they are compelled to pay into Social Security) - prune or eliminate taxes and regulations that are curbing economic growth.Overall assessment: Excellent research, presents a lot of ideas that aren’t obviously related until Tanner points out the connections. Sensible, balanced conclusions. I plan to keep the book in my library for future reference.

This book should be required reading for everyone studying or interested in economics. These easy solution to most problems is more money but that is not always possible nor the most effective or efficient solution. I do not agree with everything the author recommends but he does make very strong arguments with extensive research and supporting data. I would add one observation that I think should have been included and that is you will never be successful or accumulate wealth if you are dependent on government safety net programs.

This is an excellent book! It presents a balanced view based on research. It is as nonpartisan as writing can be about such a politically divisive topic. The approach to poverty that is suggested has real potential for improving the lives of so many people ...and not just the poor. The writing is straightforward and simple, but not simplistic. If you have a book club that reads non-fiction, this book should generate an excellent discussion. Thank you, Michael D. Tanner.

Definitely a well thought out subject. I was hoping for a little more succient solutions to one of this country’s major problems.
