This is my new favorite book for all time!The f word is not my word. I figured you could always replace it with Smurf and get the same results... well... not so much in bed... unless you are a Smurf. That said, with three ADHD boys and a fairly active girl, my inner self and my attempting to be good mommy self, were at war at bedtime. My children MUST read this (they are adults now). I SO relate!I plan to buy the real book. The one I have is from the library. But I, also, have the Audible version with Samuel L. Jackson reading it. When I finished reading, my eyes were streaming with tears and I wanted to share this with everyone I know! I have never laughed so hard! (Too many !!!!s?)Every parent owes it to themselves to have this book and enjoy it often!BTW, after my reading the library copy, I went ahead and bought the paperback AND the Kindle version. A person needs a laugh every now and then. And if you find it funny, you are, also, VERY grateful to have survived those long sleepless years!
I suppose I should start with - This is NOT a childrens bedtime book! It is a book for parents whose children refuse to go to sleep! I was shocked to find that some reviewers, apparently completely forgot to read the title of the book before purchasing. Subsequently, they also seem to have been horrificly ambushed by the fact that they have absolutely no sense of humor. For those parents who do have a sense of humor and who may not find profanity particularly offensive and who live in the real world. And have real kids. This book is definitely a 3am win!That being said...This is a totally F-ing amazing book! It's real, overworked, frustrated beyond belief, about to loose your mind at 3am, inner parent monologue. I originally bought it for a friend who was having some serious issues getting her little one to sleep. She called me after one particularly rough night & thanked me profusely for giving her the book. I guess it's nice to know that you're not alone in your child's bedtime struggles. It may not actually be all your fault and you may have a relatively normal child & are not in fact a horrible parent. A little laughter, and vulgar support, can go an awfully long way. I've since given it as a gift many times. I plan on continuing to gift it as long as the people around me continue to not learn from the couple before them and keep having babies. Who then refuse to sleep. And so on & so forth.*If you haven't already you MUST Google the celebrity reads of this book! Jennifer Garner & Samuel L. Jackson are laugh out loud funny. Samuel L. Jackson should narrate a book for every single stage of life, from being born to the grave. We'd come in & go out laughing! This book is one that will be shared from one exhausted, fed up, delusional, red eyed, sleep deprived parent to another. 'Cause sometimes all you can do is F-ing laugh. At yourself and at each other. Also, the pictures are really beautiful.
Ready for some adult humor, that will tickle most parents funny bone? Well, this little book is for you! Our son, now an adult, was the worse little offender at bedtime. His reluctance to sleep was legion in our extended family, so much so that the only time we received a good night's rest, was on the rare occasion when we had him spend the night with our relatives. I gifted the book to another parent, presented a copy to my son, and shared with one of my coworkers: the laughter was immediate and continuous. Honestly, some of the rhymes were not the best that could be imagined, but the use of such colorful language, in this context was hilariously surprising. I am reminded of someone like Betty White swearing on SNL; you will most likely be smiling now if you recall the moment! Be forewarned: if you are offended by earthy language, or the use of such language in regard to the sleeping habits of kids, this book is not for you. My grandmother, for example, would not appreciate Mr. Mansbach's book. But if you are open minded, have a funny bone and suffered through your kiddo's unwillingness to get to bed, you will find this little book a real treat! Enjoy!!!
I've now bought this book for two of my friends. One for his first child and one for his second child. This is clearly not meant to be read to the children, and is more for the parents to get a good laugh. It's very relatable to anyone who has tried to put a child to sleep and it turns in to a battle of wills. Laughter is the best medicine, and this book is full of it. Be sure to also watch the video of Sam L Jackson reading it on YouTube as it is quite humorous as well.
Has to be the most hilariously spot on book for new parents ever written! If you feel justified in throwing the first stone at this author, well, you're just not invited to my next party. Also, you lack insight. But seriously, this book is not for those of a sensitive linguistic disposition as it uses the naughtyfiretruck word in nearly every stanza. However, the beautiful watercolor illustrations and the gentle imagery are far better executed than those found in many more popular children's bedtime reads.
Every new mom/dad should get this book!! It's been proven that cursing can be good for the soul, a stress kicker, a happiness boost.. It's a harmless emotional release. And who better to blow off steam to, that the source of your current stress (completely unbeknownst to them of course)I recommend ceasing the reading of this book before age 2 when the parrot stage begins. No one wants the kid that yells the F bomb in the grocery store. This book is best suited for newborn to age 1, when you realize what a wonderful mistake you made by giving up sleep forever. You get angry, you read, you calm down, you laugh, you kiss your baby, and you wait for them to go the ... to sleep, but with a smile.You can keep it for years to come when you finally understand most of the book to calm your nerves on those rough, sleepless nights.
