I instantly found it on amazon and ordered it for our children. Also being a military family I was so encouraged by the love and support it showed from her mother!Every home in America should have this book on their children’s shelves! Oh My, Oh My!!! First let me say that Author Tara McClary Reeves in my opinion is one outstanding author.This is an amazing story of a little girl and her feelings about her dad. And the perspective of this book is one that not only helps her but others around her. The synopsis gives a great description, so I am not going to give one of my own. Instead, I am going to recommend it to all the military families, as well as to all the schools. It might seem a little off to mention it for schools, but think of how many of our kids have parents or other family members that serve? And teachers some times have to care for them. They sometimes see more than the family might see due to them not realizing how to talk or show their feelings so it can show in their behavior. I read about this book on a breeder website. I purchased my copy right before my basset hound was to give birth. It was help but I would have like the book to give more diagrams or pictures. I would use the book again for a future litter but I also used other resources to help with the process.

This is an exceptional book on breeding dogs. It's well written and easy to understand. I intend to use this book as one of the guidelines for when I breed my bitch.

Harris.My son read all three books, so I asked him for his feedback on each book and this is what he said.He found the It’s Perfectly Normal book to be “more comic’y and less squeamish.” He found the Bird and the Bee characters thru-out the book to be “really funny.” It’s Perfectly Normal contained the most information about sexual intercourse whereas The Boy’s Body Book and What’s Happening to My Body have more about health.The What’s Happening to My Body book contained “more anatomically correct drawings.” It also has a section about being uncircumcized and how to take care of your foreskin.The Boy’s Body Book is “fine,” but “it doesn’t really talk about sex and genital changes.” It doesn’t go into as much detail as the other two books. It does however have more content on older teens, curfew, chores, siblings and divorce. It also has a brief section on what to do if someone tries to touch you inappropriately.The Boy’s Body Book also doesn’t have a section about girls’ bodies, but both What’s Happening to My Body and It’s Perfectly Normal do have sections about girls.Overall, if parents want a book that is more about emotions, then he recommends the Boy’s Body Book; and if parents want a book that is more detailed about sex and genital changes, then he recommends What’s Happening to My Body or It’s Perfectly Normal.

How about a review from a reader?The first edition of this book was published in 1984; I am a man and I was given this book by my parents in 1994 at age 11 (there also exists a "...Book for Girls" version). My review is based on the first edition.Let's get this out of the way -- this book is THOROUGH. It is massively informative. There will be stuff your kid doesn't necessarily understand -- lord knows I had to reread it more than once, and your kid will, too, and that's fine -- understanding is not the primary issue: Access to information is the primary issue.-- Your kid will learn all the basic chemistry and biology behind sex and sexuality -- far more than they will pick up in any public school curriculum.-- They will be given quotes, advice, and/or told of experiences by other ordinary people throughout the pages on topics ranging from the simple facts of puberty to relationships and sex in adolescence, and these words of wisdom will come from people running the gamut from early adolescence to well on the far side of adulthood.-- They will learn the same vulgar speech teenagers and adults have used since the beginning of time (words you yourself know, parent, whether you find them offensive or not in your role as parent) and that they would otherwise and completely unavoidably pick up from their peers anyway, only sans book lacking the foreknowledge to give them a sense of respect for their own bodies, others' bodies, and what any sexual slang and cussing means and how it can be harmful and how it can be helpful.-- Actual sex is discussed to a basic but broad degree. Vaginal sex, oral sex, anal sex, and masturbation (and the mechanics of each) are covered.-- They will learn how the physical changes and the emotional changes they are experiencing will work in tandem to make them feel things they have never experienced before. They will be equipped to identify feelings ranging from changes in anger or sadness they may experience as they move out of childhood, to how they may encounter the brand new feelings of sexual desire and a desire for romantic companionship. Not only will they be able to simply identify the feelings, they will be given insight into figuring out WHY they feel the way they do, and will be given tools to be able to make safe and effective decisions about those feelings and to discuss those feelings when those feelings cause distress.-- They will also learn how to discuss these feelings with boyfriends/girlfriends or other sexual partners, and how to effectively listen to the feelings of those partners. Part of this will include being able to assert oneself when one doesn't feel ready for sex. Part of this will include how to have sex responsibly (no contraceptive method left undiscussed and condoms heavily emphasized for STI protection) in your teenage years if they instead feel ready. They will get information on STIs and how to seek treatment if they suspect a problem; they will also get information on pregnancy and all options for pregnancy, from carrying to term to keep the baby, carrying to term for adoption, and abortion. They will get first-hand accounts and other advice of how to deal with breakups and growing apart for relationships (whether or not they have become sexual), from the point-of-view of breakups both amicable and terrible, and they will get the information they need to be aware of to identify abusive relationships and how they can seek to remove themselves from an abusive situation.-- This book does not hide the fact that homosexuals exist. The language used to describe sexuality and relationship is largely neutral throughout, and where any unique risk factors exist, those are discussed. This book is a calm resource for anyone who may be experiencing any tumult in their life as a result of their sexual orientation. This book and a decent upbringing are probably why I never had any compunctions about nor took any guff for being a bisexual man.I am... not sure I've actually covered everything this book has to offer. This book is actually heavier than the mass of all its atoms because of the amount of information in it.Do not be afraid buying this book because you think your child is too young to understand what's being discussed. I reiterate: Understanding is not the problem. A lack of accurate, complete, and honest information is the problem. If your kid literally doesn't understand something (for instance, why on earth would anyone want to put someone's penis in their mouth for this "oral sex" thing), you know what your kid will do? Almost certainly shrug and forget about it. Then, some time later when they DO understand why someone would want to do that, all that information they just shoved aside is going to click into place and there you have it: A well-adjusted kid. Information has to come before understanding.Just two words of warning for when you buy this book:1) YOU read it first, parent. Read it and know it thoroughly. You could never in a million years cover all this book covers in a series of awkward, abortive "the talk"s, but some kids will have questions and you gotta be a person they can ask and you gotta study up so you can keep it relevant to the learning at hand.2) Maybe advise your child that he or she shouldn't bring this book over to their friends' houses. Some parents are extremely not okay with that sort of thing.

Cypriot cuisine is a wonderful Mediterranean island melange of Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern flavors and ingredients. The food is fresh, simple, and delicious, not overwrought. The gorgeous accompanying photographs stimulate both the appetite and the imagination.I have a great many Middle Eastern cookbooks, but this one is not a repetition of any of them. There is a chapter of recipes using fish and seafood, but being in landlocked Tennessee doesn't keep me from experimenting and substituting the protein and adapting the sauce, or preparation method to my needs. Lamb can be easily substituted with beef. I am a big fan of sumac, that wonderfully deep red and lemony-tasting spice. If you live in a small town as I do, everything is easily available online. Penzey's is one of my favorite suppliers, but there are many good ones.The recipes are arranged in the following chapters:--Salads & Snacks (14 recipes, including a brunch menu with recipes) Fresh, herbal, and colorful salads and meze components.--Savory Bakes (11 recipes, including breads and savory pastries)--Meat (25 recipes, including fowl, lamb, beef, veal, rabbit. Also hummus, pilaf, and 2 special salad accompaniments) I'll be making these with beef, pork, chicken, and turkey, which is what I have ready to hand.--Seafood (8 recipes) These are of course salt-water fish, but I'll be using some catfish and tilapia to try these, which are readily available to me, or go for frozen. You can also browse by ingredient, if you wish.I've rarely seen a cookbook by a professional chef that is so understandable and accessible to the average home cook. I have not yet cooked from any of the recipes, but I have so many collections from this part of the world and am so fondly familiar with the broad strokes of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cooking that I'm very comfortable recommending this book. It is beautifully done with an introduction to every recipe, which I love. I'm reading straight through, like a novel, while making mental notes about what I will try first: Cicassian Chicken, Black Olive and Pepper Tapenade, or will it be a beautiful round of Spinach & Feta Borek (lovely filo pie)? So hard to choose when everything looks and sounds so good.

This is a beautiful book of Turkish-Cypriot recipes. The fusion of Greek and Middle Eastern flavors makes for some wonderful flavor profiles and the recipes range from decadently delicious, like a smoked bacon and medjool date sandwich, to fresh and light, like the tomato-pomegranate salad with parsley. The dessert section is a standout in particular, and there are even a couple of mixed drink recipes for entertaining (the medjool date, espresso, and fennel martini is a must try). A unique cookbook offering, and the photography is a treat.

A very accessible, easily-readable account of the past, present, and future of transit throughout the US and the rest of the world. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes surrounding New York City, an area which Schwartz, also known as "Gridlock Sam," has much personal experience as Traffic Commissioner.The first half of the book is historical: expect to learn about the great engineering marvel and transportation failure of Robert Moses' Cross-Bronx Expressway, the political and economic reasons (as opposed to the oft-cited social reasons) behind the 50s white flight phenomenon, and other fascinating stories concerning the past 100 years of transit development. Schwartz's magic in this section is the "behind the scenes" perspective, prompting the casual reader (such as myself) to think about the issues like a transportation engineer rather than like a consumer.The second half of the book concerns the future, and does so by describing unique aspects of transit systems and traffic planning in other cities throughout the country, peppered with anecdotes from Schwartz's work as a consultant. Although I found this portion a little weaker than the NYC historical review (though I admit I am a biased reader who purchased the book out of interest in NYC's infrastructure), it was interesting to learn about the transit systems in other cities. The section about self-driving cars was especially insightful, for the same reasons as the historical portion -- it approached the topic from the perspective of a transportation engineer rather than the perspective of a technologist or consumer.The reasons I didn't rate the book 5 stars were: I found the section on Millenials and the benefits of walking a little bit unnecessarily long, although I understand why Schwartz would include it assuming an older target audience. I also would have appreciated more details, both historical and technical, in some sections, even if those details risk boring or alienating a more casual reader.If you're looking for a very easy to read introduction to the broad world of transportation and its political, social, and economic state within the country (or specifically NYC), then I highly recommend this book. If you're looking for a detailed introduction to transportation engineering, this might not be the right place to begin, although it might serve as motivational material to dig deeper.

Very fascinating book while remaining accessible and fun to read. The author does a great job of combining in-depth technical language without suffering from a dry writing style.In regards to content, his descriptions are thorough and open minded. Despite what many may think, the book is not a complete attack on cars, but rather an exploration of the benefits of reducing car presence in densely populated areas and making other forms of transportation more appealing. He still acknowledges the role cars fill and their importance to the transportation sector.I would recommend this book to anyone who's curious in how transportation works in a city, places with state of the art transportation systems, and what the future of commuting and traveling can be.

Sam Schwartz speaks from experience, augmented by thorough reading on the achievements of others. His engaging style weaves one into the complexity of competing ideas and interests, always suggesting ways to do the right thing. Street Smarts is a major contribution to the great walkability shift so essential for sustainable, pleasant mobility in our lives. Engineers, planners, urban designers, elected officials and concerned citizens, read this book to strengthen your transportation understanding and win the looming policy debates.

I haven't quite finished reading it yet, but so far I'm enjoying it a lot. Most of the time, books on such topics are about as engrossing to read as watching paint dry. However, Schwartz makes it interesting. He describes how cities got into the fix they're in and how they're getting themselves out of it. If you live in a city (and in the US that's over half of us) get this book. I recommend it highly.

I greatly enjoyed this book. The author is knowledgeable and has a great deal of professional experience with the subject matter. The writing is crisp and clean, and reads easily. Stories and personalization of the topics addressed make it entertaining reading as well as informative. Highly recommended.

This book was an eye-opener. I think the biggest thing for me was how it addressed autonomous vehicles or driverless cars and how they are not the solution that so many people think they are, that is, without effective integrated transit systems to collaborate along side them.

Great lessons from one of the nation's most prominant traffic engineers on congestion, sprawl and why we need to do something about them. As a Cleveland, Ohio cyclist, I found it insightful, but as a taxpayer I found it compelling. We can't afford unbridled highway expansion, when we can't maintain and repair what we already have.

I picked up this book in preparation of getting a new puppy. It's been 15+ years since I've had a dog and since I'm now part of busy family and have an active 6yo, I thought I'd need more forethought than last time, (when I picked up a dog in college with nothing more than: "Aww, cute puppy! I'll get him!"). While our last dog was a very kind house companion, she was also riddled with anxiety, not particularly warm to strangers or new contexts and never managed to learn how to walk properly on leash. Fearful and shy, it was difficult to enjoy her outside our home. We want to make sure our next dog (with thoughtful attention to puppy choosing and realistic training) can be more of a "go anywhere" dog that we can enjoy running with and taking to social activities.After reading McConnell's book (then checking out her website and youtube videos), I can see what of our behaviors exasperated the challenges and temperament of our previous dog. I consider myself a "dog person" (grew up with golden retrievers) and non-archaic in terms of my knowledge of pets, training and K-9 behavior. Nevertheless, I was astounded at how much this book taught me. Full of digestible research made accessible through real-life stories and examples (think Malcolm Gladwell meets dog behavior enthusiast), this book gave me both practical knowledge and poignant insight into the way we consider human-dog (and human-animal) relationships. I feel so much more prepared to choose a dog, socialize it well and exercise its brain and body through clear communication in the household. I also feel more empowered to ready our daughter by talking about the nonverbal cues of dogs and how she can be a loving owner without smothering a new puppy.I recommend picking up McConnell's The Puppy Primer, which we purchased at the same time as more of a "how to" guide to the first days at home, but DO NOT SKIP THIS BOOK. It gave so much more of the "why" behind the recommendations of the author in training and its an enjoyable read for experienced and novice dog owners alike!

I love, love, love this book. I have already purchased copies as gifts for all of my family members who have dogs. This should be required reading for anyone who has a dog, is thinking about owning a dog, or is around friends/family with dogs.Just as I am fascinated about how people interact with each other, I am very curious about the unique relationship between humans and dogs. This book draw's on Dr. McConnell's background in psychology and animal behavior. I believe that her background makes her an authority on the topic of how canines and humans communicate with each other.As other reviewers have noted, this is not a book on how to train your dog. However, I believe that this book should be a pre-requisite to dog training. It provides a foundation on WHY certain methods work and why others are ineffective. There are so many myths floating around about dog training and people love to create sound bites and quick tips out of all of the available information. Context is key.One of the tactics discussed is how to get a dog to go the direction you want it to go. Dogs look in the direction they want to go. Humans tend to prefer to face the dog which is actually perceived by dog as encroachment of their space and typically makes the dog want to back up. While on Christmas vacation, we had a puppy that was insisting on sleeping in Mom's favorite arm chair. Instead of charging up to the dog and speaking at him when I wanted him to get off the chair, I walked up to him, turned away from him, and pointed to the floor. With my body and my hand pointing in the direction I wanted the dog to go, it was like magic! I didn't even have to use my voice to communicate my command. The family was amazed! This is just one example of how understanding what my body language means to a dog enabled me to develop a simple and effective method of communication.I actually liked the author's personal stories about her working dogs and their different personalities. While others may feel these are irrelevant to the overall book, I think they enhance the book. In my opinion, any type of behavior analysis only benefits from more real-life examples.Please get a copy of this book for yourself and for any dog owners you know. Understanding what you are really saying to a dog is the first step in creating effective communication which leads to a more rewarding relationship.

I was expecting a lot of dry scientific behavioral theory and such. Was I ever wrong, and pleasantly surprised! Patricia McConnell Ph.D. isn't just a scientist, she's also a sheep farmer and working Border Collie trainer. She neatly weaves together scientific theory and pragmatic application in this book.It's mostly about how dogs perceive and interpret human body language. I've always been a natural at reading dogs, but never gave much thought to how they read us. I learned quite a bit from it, like how dogs respond much better to subtle signals than to words, and how our mixed signals and words are frequently confusing to them. She teaches us to become consciously aware of the nonverbal signals we are sending, and start using ones the dog understands. It really works!The writing style is quite good; it's informal and engaging, repeatedly ranging from factual to practical to humorous to emotional.I found most of the ethological stuff about wild primates and canidae to be extraneous material in a dog book. But there's not a lot of it.It's an enjoyable and informative read. If you love dogs and inter-species communication, you'll enjoy this book. Understanding and using more nonverbal signals will help a lot with the training and enjoyment of your dog.
