This is not a book about how to set up your accounting and it doesn't purport to be a marketing book or to target profit traps.Every attorney should be able to tell the difference between his asset and a hole in the cash flow (sorry, I couldn't resist) and this book will get you there. If you're just starting out in accounting/bookkeeping, this book and a download of the open-source (I.e. free) program GnuCash will get you going.I read the book in under an hour, but I was already familiar with some of the concepts. I would not recommend this as an advanced accounting book or as a roadmap to building your chart of accounts, but it contains precisely the information a sole practitioner needs to feel comfortable with GnuCash or QuickBooks.
This is the most basic explanation of general accounting definitions. It is the equivalent of the first day of high school accounting. Do not be fooled. It will not help you set up an accounting system to deal with law firm expenses, income, and trust accounts, it may help you decipher what your accountant that you will need to hire is telling you.
Its an easy read with practical information and good examples. Its a good place to begin when forming your practice and forming your accounting methods.
