Review

Praise for A Year in the WildernessNamed One of Twenty Big Indie Books of Fall 2017 by Publishers WeeklyFeatured in the Wall Street Journal"With this book, the Freemans prove themselves natural successors of Sigurd Olson's legacy of carefully crafted activist writing. . . . It is an excellent book for any season―once you read it, you will find it difficult to get the Freeman’s singing wilderness or their lone, lingering call of warning out of your head."―Los Angeles Review“For 365 days in 2015 and 2016, the Freemans lived in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, paddling a canoe or towing a toboggan from campsite to campsite. They fell through the ice. They were trailed by wolves. They drank from the lakes. Mostly, they bore witness.”―Minneapolis Star Tribune“Gorgeous . . . [the Freemans’] words are complemented by an outstanding selection of photographs that immerse the reader in the watery landscape, making an indelible impact.”―Canoe & Kayak“Through evocative personal narrative and nature photography, the Freemans . . . speak with a single attentive and amiable voice that centers the joys and challenges of navigating the land and water. . . . Gorgeous color photographs focus on the human experience of being in wilderness and augment a novel work that should draw attention to the plight of the Boundary Waters.”―Publishers Weekly“This book is a documentary on paper, the plural we of the authors’ voice inviting the reader to join the conversation … We need conservation activism, we need adventure activism, we need witness activism, and we need more writers to put places to the page. The BWCA was protected through the written word and A Year in the Wilderness is an extension of that work.”―Orion Magazine“The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is among our nation’s great natural treasures. It is also fragile, and increasingly threatened by the prospect of sulfide-ore copper mining. At this moment in our history, when calls are growing to privatize public lands and weaken national parks, adventurers Amy and Dave Freeman spent a year in the Boundary Waters, experiencing its singular beauty and advocating for its preservation. In this extraordinary book, they have done us all an invaluable service, offering a wonderfully compelling testimony for the value of wild places and the creatures who inhabit them. I urge you to read it, and then to join the Freemans in advocating for the preservation of the Boundary Waters.”―Vice President Walter Mondale“Recounting their adventure in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Amy and Dave Freeman offer a compelling tale about the beauty as well as the brutal challenges of living a year in this northern wilderness―one of our nation’s very first areas protected by the Wilderness Act of 1964. Their first-hand observations about the wild, the land ethic, and threats to this natural heritage build on a long tradition. Exemplifying a new generation of outdoors writer-adventurers, the Freemans infuse excitement and energy into the wilderness canon crafted by Mardy and Olaus Murie, Sigurd Olson, and other champions in earlier generations who have done so much to protect our wild places by describing them with a keen eye and a passionate heart.”―Jamie Williams, President, The Wilderness Society“Here’s the story of a great adventure in one of the planet’s most gorgeous wildernesses―and with high stakes at risk in a fight to stave off a truly gross assault on its integrity. So many reasons to read this book!”―Bill McKibben, author of Wandering Home“Although my adventures have taken me to both ends of the earth, I share with Amy and Dave Freeman the same life-affirming natural centerpoint for physical and spiritual sustenance: Minnesota’s Boundary Waters wilderness. While I occasionally get to taste the wonders of this pristine place, they got to live and breathe it for a full year. The depth of their insights in this remarkable book reflects the intensity of their extraordinary experience and their love for this amazing national treasure.”―Ann Bancroft“All-in-all this is a fantastic narrative, with something for every outdoor-loving reader. The descriptions of the wilderness in four seasons will make nature-lovers happy. Stories of the gear, sled dogs and camping’s constant problem-solving will please experienced trekkers. And there is a note of nostalgia in the effort, proof that a man and a woman can leave the city behind and make a difference in the world. “Dave and Amy Freeman understand something very significant―that an iconic object such as a canoe can make a strong political statement, in this case in opposition to sulfide-ore mining in a pristine wilderness―much like an earlier American hero, Woody Guthrie, used his guitar to fight fascism. This land, they all say, is your land.”―Mark Neuzil, coauthor of Canoes: A Natural History in North America

I really enjoyed reading about the year Amy and Dave Freeman spent in the beautiful Boundary Waters. I liked reading about the four seasins, the changing of the seasons, the plants, trees, animals and the many lakes the two traveled through. This couple love wild country and know how to live in both extremes, hot and cold. The pair set up camp in a tent which they carried with them, portaged across the land, traveled from one lake to another, there are numerous lakes. The book is beautiful, the photography is lovely and well done. Amy and Dave seem,to love their wilderness year, both writing about all they saw and did along the way, meeting people who share the same interests they do. I received the book and am happy to be able to read of this wonderful trip and the great time the two had though there was much work involved, setting up camp, breaking it down and moving on, plus the dangers involved. The couple felt this is something they had to do.The couple lived in their tent when the weather was far below zero, in summer, hot and humid. There were wild animals out and about, fun to watch, but dangerous. Winter is hard on animals. Amy and Dave watched and laughed at animal antics. They loved seeing the beautiful and graceful trumpeter swans. They missed winter when that season came to an end. For a long time Dave and Amy saw no people at a time, then very few.Spring and summer brings many to enjoy Boundary Waters. Boundary Waters becomes crowded with folks playing water sports and doing other fun things. During summer came a storm pelting the earth, then hailing. Trees came tumbling down crushing everything in their paths. It seemed summer was the most dangerous during that summer. Then came the end. Dave, Amy and their companion dog, Tank, came back to civilization. Dave and Amy took some time to get back to the noisy and busy world. They miss Wild Country, the quiet, the beauty, and singing birds and everything else about the wild.Loved reading about the pair's adventure. Not many would be able to live that lifestyle, but for some they want nothing else.

Whether read in an intentionally quiet time away or casually picked up on a coffee table and browsed simply for the wonderful photographs, this is an exceptional book by two exceptional people. It is a wonderful "window" into life in the wilderness Equally important it is a window into the shared journey of a couple bound together by a common love. In the book's early pages the authors share a quote (by Sigurd Olson) that shapes all that follows: "Wilderness can be appreciated only by contrast, and solitude understood only when we have been without it. We cannot separate ourselves from society, comradeship, sharing and love. Unless we can contribute something from wilderness experience, derive some solace or peace to share with others, then the real purpose is defeated." What better words of introduction could there be to a book written with the purpose of bringing the wilderness to life in the heart of the reader.

In this book Amy and Dave Freeman share their adventure of spending a full year in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to bring attention to the risks of toxic sulfide-ore copper mining to this pristine wilderness. For those who have experienced the joys of the Boundary Waters, it brings back memories of familiar places and familiar feelings and sensations. For those who have not had the opportunity, it is a nice introduction to this magical part of the world. The book includes numerous illustrations to complement and enhance the text.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys the beauty of nature; and, particularly, to those who would like to protect a pristine wilderness area from the threat posed by sulfide-ore copper mining. A Year in the Wilderness: Bearing Witness in the Boundary Waters

My husband and I have both throughly enjoyed reading "A Year In The Wilderness". This book has many educational aspects about the wilderness that can be read and shared with the entire family. The passion of the writers for the protection of the wilderness is inspiring. The photography is wonderful and draws the reader into their experience. We are in awe of their ability to live in the Boundry Waters for a year through some very challenging and harsh conditions.

I (with three other guys) enjoyed a week each June during the sixties and seventies and still have fond memories of those trips today. I also took my three sons on that same trip in the mid eighties and found the area much more crowded, but still a truly memorable experience. I also enjoyed the Freeman's account of an entire year there as well. I have now sent each of the boys a copy of A YEAR IN THE WILDERNESS and am looking forward to talking to them about their reaction to the book.Read the book and plan a trip, you will be glad you did.

This book brought to me peace, comfort and tears. Excellent read!

A great read. We need many more like Dave and Amy to help save our wilderness from the mining companies and greedy politicians.

I bought this for friends 'up north.' I liked it so much, I'm buying another one for me. Clear prose and gorgeous photography. Looking forward to reading the 'year in the wilderness' story in more depth.

Bernard Nathanson, MD, was a founder of the pro-choice movement and a tireless crusader for the legalization of abortion. By his own admission, Nathanson presided over more than 60,000 abortions and personally performed 5,000 abortions himself. He co-founded the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws (NARAL), which later became the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) and is now NARAL Pro-Choice America.“The Hand of God” is Nathanson’s recounting of his journey from being a pro-choice activist to being a pro-life activist; from being a “Jewish atheist” to being a Roman Catholic. This book covers his remarkable odyssey – medically, ethically and spiritually.Family life for him was tumultuous – no faith, no maternal love, phobias, fantasies and fears. His father fed the monster that Nathanson would become with utilitarian views of women. “Women were generally relegated to the back of the bus.” He was married four times with his first three marriages ending in divorce. His introduction to the “satanic world of abortion” came while in medical school when his girlfriend had an unplanned pregnancy. He “selfishly” insisted on an abortion which destroyed the relationship. Questions from the girlfriend riddled the relationship: “Why didn’t he marry me? Why couldn’t we have had this baby? Why should I have had to imperil my life and my future children for the sake of his convenience and academic schedule? Will God punish me for what I have done by making me barren?”Then there was another unplanned pregnancy with a woman who loved him very much. He himself performed the abortion. He destroyed his own child. He had no feelings aside from the sense of accomplishment and pride of expertise. Nathanson relates this to the gates of the satanic world of abortion being opened by his selfish narcissism and inability to love. He names this hell as the “suffering of one unable to love.”He aborted unborn children of friends, colleagues, casual acquaintances and even teachers. “There was never a shred of self-doubt, never a wavering of the supreme confidence that he was doing a major service for those who sought him out.”Nathanson’s journey continued uninterrupted until he had the chance to observe a real-time abortion with ultrasound. He soon came to regard the procedure as unjustified homicide and refused to perform it.Once exposed to the truth of his “horrendous procedure,” he stopped doing abortions for any reason; dedicated himself to the fight against abortion; and revealed to the world the lies he and his abortion movement colleagues had told to break down public opposition. In 1985, Nathanson employed the ultrasound to produce a documentary film, “The Silent Scream,” which energized the pro-life movement and threw the pro-choice side onto the defensive by showing in graphic detail the killing of a twelve-week-old fetus in a suction abortion. Nathanson used the footage to describe the facts of fetal development and to make the case for the humanity and dignity of the child in the womb. At one point, viewers see the child draw back from the surgical instrument and open his mouth: “This,” Nathanson says in the narration, “is the silent scream of a child threatened imminently with extinction. With his change of heart, pro-life conversion and activism, Nathanson became a target for the anti-life forces, the subject of ridicule and satire, and the butt of jokes. He came to regard the taking of innocent human lives as comparable to Hitler’s Dachau, Stalin’s Gulag, or Pole Pot’s Cambodia. He spoke publicly of what was soon to come as a result of the misuse of science and the lack of respect for the sacredness of human life: genetic manipulation, sex selection, surrogate motherhood, frozen embryos, cloning stem cell research, and the sale and use of body parts. He was a true prophet for what he predicted would happen.Nathanson’s spiritual conversion followed his ethical conversion (to pro-life). Those in the pro-life movement had a profound impact on him. He also came to understand the Catholic Church’s position on life. The Church, which he attacked for years, stood and continues to stand virtually alone in the defense of the sacredness of human life from conception to natural death.Fr. J.C. McCloskey who served as a spiritual mentor to Nathanson calls “The Hand of God” one of the most important autobiographies of the 20th Century. John Cardinal O’Connor who baptized him at New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral commented “that the lack of respect for life is rooted in the lack of self-respect, and the lack of self-respect as a consequence of sin.”“The Hand of God” shows the power of God’s grace as Nathanson confesses his own heartlessness in his role as a leader of the pro-abortion movement and then becomes an important force in reversing the blind acceptance of the procedure.

This is truly an amazing story written by a very intelligent man. One of the key founders of NARAL, the notorious abortion-rights group, tells his story into the abortion rights movement, and then out of it. What changed his heart? Ultrasound. How can one deny human life, coming face to face with it? But beyond being a solid pro-life treatise, this book is also an enjoyable autobiography. Nathanson's Jewish upbringing, his father (also an obgyn)'s strict background, all told with vivid imagery, I can feel myself walking the streets of Montreal with them. He examines his relationship with his father (whom he finds to be a study in self-contradiction) with just enough introspection. He seems to be honest with his own shortcomings: several failed marriages, an absentee relationship with his only son. His vocabulary is extensive, but it's usually not hard to figure out what he's saying if you can grasp the context. (Or, if you're really ambitious, read with a dictionary at your side.) Having read Norma McCorvey (Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade)'s "Won by Love" recently, I thought this would follow in the same vein. In one sense, it does: two highly influential pro-abortion figures experience a dramatic change of heart and begin working to save tiny lives instead of advocating for the freedom to destroy them. But while McCorvey's book is highly readable, this one is in a higher academic bracket. An excellent book, highly recommended.

This is a man on a journey out of the abortion industry. This book comes years after his "Aborting America" and reflects a new stage in his biography. Nathanson's father has since passed, and much of this auto-biography reflects the complex embittered relationship Nathanson had for his dad. Dr. Nathanson details his life in the abortion industry, as a major advocate for its legalization and his gradual disenchantment and eventual departure from the industry. Every serious pro-lifer needs to know this man's name and story. Every pro-choicer needs to be aware of the testimonial and biographical force this man represents.

How hard to live your life focusing on one set of principles, teaching those principles to others, profiting from those actions? Then to recognize that the life you've lived is wrong? Bernard Nathanson's book is stunning in its honesty. And to confess his change to the world is amazing. Read this book, no matter your views on abortion, and have your eyes opened to the difficulty of honesty.

Fascinating how as a true story such a qualified well educated medical doctor could change his lifetime view of abortion. Well worth reading and very educational giving an inside view so few people know or realize.

One of the most honest books I have read. It includes self reflection from an honest perspective. It also represents a journey of a tortured soul seeking redemption after years of treating life with indifference. This book is a must read for both pro-life and pro-choice advocates.

Really interesting, well written, and sad, of course, but the good doctor tells the truth and it has a good ending.

About the Author

John Bunyan (1628-1688) was born in Elstow, England, and his life was spared twice in his early years, something he believed God had done for a special purpose. In November 1660, when Bunyan arrived to preach in the little town of Lower Samsell, he was informed that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Unwilling to denounce his Christian faith and his calling to the ministry, he was imprisoned for twelve years. Among the many writings he published during his imprisonment are The Holy City, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and the most famous, The Pilgrim's Progress.

This was for my daughters spanish class and it was great

This book is a true inspiration for all Christians, I would recommend it to any new or seasoned believer to read. It's a depiction of our Christian life from start to end, the journey, the ups and downs... Everything is in this book. The story is easy to ready and follow, but it correlates to everything written in the bible.
