I don't really ever leave reviews, and even when something is bad, I just ignore it and move on. But, was really looking forward to this, and immediately was disappointed. The main reason I got this recipe book, was because there is a big difference between the Crock Pot Express, and the other popular electric pressure cooker, Instant Pot. One of the main differences is no Manual button, so you can't use a non-preset option. While looking at a bunch of recipes online, most had a manual section, which was sad, since the Crock Pot Express did not have that feature.I then see this book, whose title is, "500 Crock Pot Express Recipes" which would make you think, they are specific to the Crock Pot Express. Sadly, that is not the case. There are many mentions of using the Manual cook setting, referencing buttons that are for the Instant Pot and not on the Crock Pot Express. Honestly I think this Author probably just did a search/replace for Instant Pot and Crock Pot Express, and magic, new Recipe book.Overall, 1 star because of misleading content about what the book contained, not necessarily that the content is bad, it just isn't applicable to the Crock Pot Express.Hopefully this help someone else who may be looking for a recipe book, that is specific to their Crock Pot Express.

I thought that this just might be a great reference book for my Crock Pot Express, but I am sad to say I am returning this book. The recipes are very poorly written. Words like, "saute for a few minutes" tells me nothing; giving the length of time for the prep and cooking does not include "soak overnight"; "Take the roast out, add the rest of the ingredients, now put the roast back in"; "Throw the rest of the ingredients into the Crock Pot" . . This just doesn't follow the course of a well written cook book. Another thing, the listing of the ingredients does not match up with the way the meals are prepared. I spent time reviewing some of the recipes and had trouble reorganizing the listing in my mind and where they related to the actual action of the cooking. Sorry, but I shall look elsewhere. I believe this was a rush job in time for the holiday sales. Also, Does the Crock Pot Company approve of this publication? I wonder??

This book was clearly created for the instant pot. I would not recommend this if you have a crock pot express as the information is not correct. This book frequently uses the “manual” function but the manual function does not exist on the crock pot express. The whole reason I bought this was for a work around in recipes to the manual function. I would not recommend this if you have a crock pot express- deceptive marketing.

I bought this book specifically for my Crock Pot Express because although I have experience using a stovetop pressure cooker, an electric countertop model was new to me. Every recipe I have tried to make has not had enough liquid or does not instruct the user to add liquid. The two examples I have attached are recipes I made yesterday. The main rule of pressure cooking is to use at least one cup of thin liquid in the recipes. While the rump roast recipe does state to add 1-1/4 cup water, it goes into the marinade and the recipe never states to add any liquid to the pot. To be safe I used the remaining Marinade as my liquid. It worked well. I also made the pasta recipe. The recipe as written did not work. I kept getting E6 errors. I added an additional 1-1/4 cup of water to the recipe and only used 1 lb of pasta and almost 2 pounds of tomato purée. Even then it was on the dry side and there is no “sauce” per se. I don’t know if the author has never used a pressure cooker and felt most stovetop or oven recipes are easily modified, but that isn’t how it’s done. Photos would also have been helpful. So would an index. Or an editor who had experience with pressure cookers. Or even using the settings that the CPE has. I’m ready to use this book as a doorstop. Very disappointed.

We love our crock pot but quickly exhausted the recipes in the little booklet that came with it. In our search for more variety, I picked up author Jamie Stewart's "Crock Pot Recipes" and this is a wonderful collection of over 700 recipes that are both varied and easy to make. There are recipes for breakfast, snacks and appetizers, main courses, and desserts. All are very well explained with step-by-step instructions and we have been loving coming home at the end of the day to delicious smells. The pdf included with images was helpful as well. Recommended.

This book includes a variety of interesting recipes; however, it could have benefited from better proofreading/editing. For example, there are missing words here and there. The ingredient lists are not in the order they're used in the recipe (as is typically done with cookbooks). Also, at times the directions aren't clear. The author doesn't always explicitly indicate which mode should be used. Some recipes have things like "Cook for 11 minutes. Cook for 6 minutes." Umm, what? And why do many recipes mention Manual when the preface to the book indicates that this is simply the Beans setting? Things like this lead to unnecessary confusion and could be easily fixed to produce a better cookbook.

None of these recipes are for beginners or easy! They are very complicated and use odd foods 🤮

Carelessly written book. Many recipes lack complete instructions such as "do you have to secure the lid" and if the "pressure relief is fast or natural". Statement "relieve pressure per manufacturers instructions" also does not cut it. The section on making snacks is not worth having. After reviewing recipes, I must make some additions.Revised on 3-11-2018Found several recipes that neglect to tell you when to add ingredients. Split pea and hamburger recipe neglects to tell about adding peas. Also it does not sound right to soak split peas. Many, many recipes require ingredients that are hard to find like duck grease and duck fillets.I left 2 stars because the layout of book is nice.

From the Inside Flap

After enduring an injury at Dunkirk during World War II, Laurie Odell is sent to a rural veterans' hospital in England to convalesce. There he befriends the young, bright Andrew, a conscientious objector serving as an orderly. As they find solace and companionship together in the idyllic surroundings of the hospital, their friendship blooms into a discreet, chaste romance. Then one day, Ralph Lanyon, a mentor from Laurie's schoolboy days, suddenly reappears in Laurie's life, and draws him into a tight-knit social circle of world-weary gay men. Laurie is forced to choose between the sweet ideals of innocence and the distinct pleasures of experience. Originally published in the United States in 1959, The Charioteer is a bold, unapologetic portrayal of male homosexuality during World War II that stands with Gore Vidal's The City and the Pillar and Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories as a monumental work in gay literature.

Deservedly a classic of gay literature (and literature in general). Despite the title, it's not about ancient Greece or Rome, although Plato's Phaedrus is a major influence. Rather, it's set in England during the early days of WWII, after the retreat at Dunkirk, when Laurie (short for Laurence), a soldier injured in the war, and Ralph, an older schoolmate who'd gone into the merchant marine after expulsion for homosexual activity and who is unable to resume his post as ship captain due to an injury of his own, meet again.Laurie's feelings are divided because of his friendship with Andrew, a conscientious objector assigned to work as an orderly, who is unaware that Laurie harbors romantic and sexual feelings toward him. He spend the book vacillating between his close friendship with Andrew, in which the main conflict is their attitude toward the war and what's right and wrong in a more general sense, and his more tempestuous relationship with Ralph, who accepts his homosexuality and is sexually active. In some ways, Laurie's relationship with Andrew echoes his earlier relationship with Ralph at school. Some of the things Ralph says to Laurie in an effort to convince him to choose him are an eloquent testimony to the desire for tolerance and an equal footing with non-homosexuals. Eventually, Laurie makes a definitive choice, which makes this a gay romance (or an early precursor to m/m), but the book is as much about the war as it is about gayness and is as much about life choices and philosophies as gay life in the 1940s.While the writing is generally excellent, the book is not perfect. While in some places the book is bold for the time of publication (1959), in others the language is abstract, opaque, and coded, so it's not a quick read, and sometimes I wasn't sure I had interpreted the words the way Ms. Renault intended. The picture painted of Laurie's mother is not pretty, and Ms. Renault seems to subscribe to the theory current at the time that homosexuality resulted from an absent or remote father and a domineering mother. There are other instances of fleeting misogyny as well. It also idealizes ancient Greece to an alarming extent; Plato's Phaedrus is not only discussed but used as a subtle means of seduction, and the text accepts the supposedly chaste and platonic nature of the practice of pederasty -- romantic friendships formed between young men prior to marriage and beautiful teenage boys, in which the older partner serves as a mentor and guide. It's true that this is Laurie (and Ralph's) concept of the practice, but it's highly idealized. Whatever was known in Renault's time, it's now evident (from pottery, among other things) that such relationships weren't as chaste, platonic, and philosophical as Plato depicts.

!Mary Renault’s book leaves the reader confused at its start. First we meet 5-year-old Laurie watching his father pack his things for his final departure, next chapter we find the 16-year-old Spud in his Dorm at boarding school, and next we meet the 23-year-old in a Sisters of Charity Hospital in England. No explanation of that nickname or where, how, and when he got injured. This book was written by a nurse who had a gay lover in 1959. Apparently it has the distinction of being the first novel written about openly gay male lovers. It also drags on interminably without seeming to get anywhere. Some books seem much longer than they are. One thing becomes very clear, gay relationships are as fraught and commitment challenged as the hetero variety.

This was an (for me) and unforgettable story, and I am 80 years old and have trouble remembering my own name sometimes. It is about some veterans of the beginning of WW2 who survived the evacuation of British and allied soldiers from Dunkirk, France. The main action takes place in a hospital in Britain where some of the wounded military men were be ing treated after they made it safely back to Britain. It is a "gay" story and involves one soldier in particular who is beginning to realize his gayness and is attracted to a young Quaker conscious objector serving as an orderly in the hospital. He also meets a classmate of his from school who is also gay and Laurie (short for Lawrence) Odell is torn between his love for the Quaker (who can't return his love for religious reasons) and his former classmate who is quite experienced in gay life and is perhaps a bit to calloused and perhaps too jaded for Laurie. It is a touching story, and Mary Renault's command of the English language is out of the ordinary. She is a very fine writer and I look forward to reading some of her other books. Even though this was written in the late 1950's, it is well worth reading today and does not seem out of date. It was one of the first openly gay themed books to be published in this country along with Gore Vidal"s "The City and the Pillar."The story has other characters, of course, and Laurie (short for Laurence_
