The Sustainable City, by Steven Cohen

Review

Steven Cohen shows us how the great cities of the twenty-first century can use sustainable methods to thrive economically while simultaneously providing a higher quality of life for their residents. A must read for current and future leaders in a rapidly urbanizing world. (William Eimicke, Columbia University)At the city level, the question of how to handle water resources, energy use, and transportation is not abstract but concrete. Citizens, planners, businesspeople, and policy makers can easily see the problems and how a sustainable approach would be beneficial. Steven Cohen draws on his extensive teaching and public management experience in documenting the kinds of sustainability measures that have been successful in major cities around the world, and he points to what other cities realistically can do in the future. (Michael E. Kraft, coeditor of The Oxford Handbook of U.S. Environmental Policy)For anyone looking for a cleaner and most sustainable urban lifestyle, it is required reading. One hopes this book, along with Cohen’s other works of the same vein, will line the bookshelves of city offices everywhere. (Bryan Zepp Jamieson Electric Review)

Steve Cohen gives his reader a lot to think about. The Sustainable City covers a wide range of issues and discusses more issues and ideas than most books do. Readers will get an education in many topics of sustainability in general as well as specifically in regards to cities. This definitely should be on your reading list if you are interested in getting to know the various issues that can make a city a sustainable place.FWIW, to probe further I recommend downloading (for free) and reading New York City's OneNYC (used to be called PlaNYC). As of this writing, the latest version is called "Progress Report OneNYC 2017". While this is a very worthwhile, readable and education 272 page document, I personally recommend the original 2007 PlaNYC - a 157 page document. Just Google (i.e. "PlaNYC 2007") to find either of these online. The 2007 document was / is precedent setting in its breadth and depth and even if your city is not NYC, it will have a lot of relevant ideas.Full disclosure: I know the author. He is not aware that I purchased his book (via Amazon) nor that I writing this review.

Review

“An elegy to place, history, and culture, to innocence (and ignorance) that have evolved to a macroscopic understanding of how the world works.”  —John Nichols, author, The Milagro Beanfield War“This memoir haunts me in the way that all fine and true writing does. My Town is a celebration of a woman’s fully-lived and courageous life, one not to be missed.”  —Pamela Uschuk, author, Crazy Love"Will resonate with anyone who has lived in New Mexico, anyone who came up in the 1950s, and many who did neither."  —Lucy R. Lippard, author, The Lure of the Local“Randall’s ingenuous poetry captures [a lonely woman] exploring space, shapes, light, people and coming of age experiences translated into the brail of a place unconscious of its cultural power and full of hypocrisy, hospitality, racism, and generosity.”  —Maria Varela, New Mexico community organizer"Margaret Randall's My Town is an exciting and genre-bending memoir from one of America's most prolific and socially conscious artists. Her blending of poetry, prose, and photography offers the reader multiple avenues through which to enter My Town's themes of memory and place." —Southwestern American Literature

The expression "all politics is local" means that the exertion of power and its consequences are above all not abstractions but immediate concerns where one happens to live one's life. In the case of Margaret Randall's "My Town," as well as her numerous other books, the same could be said for all poetics and all social consciousness, for Randall, who started out her writing career in downtown NYC in the late 1950s before living for over two decades in Mexico, Cuba and Nicaragua, has spent her writing career observing her various localities up close, with a compassion that matches her intelligence and her ethical engagement with others. In her memoir "My Town" she returns to Albuquerque, where she now lives , the city in which she grew up, to see what has changed in it and, in turn, in her as well. Tracing recollections through photographs, poems, and essays, she speaks of place as an extension of her being, and looks back on the 1950s Albuquerque in light of what has changed in those internal and external topographies. Highlights include an essay on the dark secrets of Lovelace Hospital, a poem on community racism and creative writing class, circa the mid 1950s, and moving essays on her relationships to her father( "Dad's Metronome"), another on a onetime love interest named Sam whose life story circles back into her own unexpectedly decades later, and Randall's tender portrait of her earliest champion, the painter Elaine de Kooning.

Queen Mary died 65 years ago. Today most people remember her as an unapproachable regal figure covered with jewels, but in her long lifetime of 85 years she interacted with countless numbers of people. She was the first British royal lady to travel extensively, roaming over much of Europe, making two long tours of India, and even reaching Australia. Born in what was for royalty limited circumstances in 1867, she married the future King George V in 1893 and became successively Duchess of York, Princess of Wales, Queen Consort, and Queen Dowager. She was the grandmother of the present Queen. After her death in 1953 Queen Mary remained remarkable in yet another way by becoming the first Queen Consort to have an official biographer appointed to write her life story. James Pope-Hennessy spent three years researching and writing what became an enormously successful biography that painted a vivid picture not only of Queen Mary's life but also of the milieu in which she moved and flourished for 85 years. As part of his research Pope-Hennessy met with a large number of men and women with whom Queen Mary had interacted, including relatives, courtiers, former servants, and in some cases ordinary men and women who had in some way had dealings with her. Pope-Hennessy kept extensive notes on his meetings with these people, in some cases writing lengthy and very vivid accounts of his discussions. Now, over forty years after Pope-Hennessy's own death in 1974, Hugo VIckers, an acclaimed royal biographer and historian in his own right, has edited these notes and accounts and made them available for everyone to enjoy. There is indeed much to enjoy in The Quest for Queen Mary. I found Pope-Hennessy's descriptions of his meetings with the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the Grand Duchess Xenia, the King and Queen of Sweden, and other royals to be amusing and sometimes wryly irreverent. Pope-Hennessy was a keen observer, and his assessments are shrewd and penetrating. Even more interesting are his descriptions of his meetings with former ladies in waiting and other courtiers like Lady Cynthia Colville, Lord Claud Hamilton, or the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, because they often spoke frankly of both the strengths and weaknesses of Queen Mary's character. And then there are the more "ordinary" people like elderly servants who remembered the Queen in her youth and who had some vivid memories to share. Pope-Hennessy and Vickers provide many interesting revelations, including the identity of the man with whom the young Princess Mary of Teck fell deeply in love but was not allowed to marry because he was not of royal blood. The Quest for Queen Mary has not yet been published in the United States, but it is well worth seeking out. Pope-Hennessy's vivid descriptions of his interviews, enhanced by Vickers' detailed footnotes and introductions, make it a book to be read and reread.

For a certain reader, "The Quest for Queen Mary" is just plain fun, to be drawn out to completion as long as possible. James Pope-Hennessy wrote the official biography of Queen Mary, widow of George V, in the late 1950s, and in the exhaustive process took candid notes that were not to be published for 50 years. His interviews and tours of royal and aristocratic residences provide insights into the (then declining) institutions of European monarchy - viewed not from an historical perspective but from a "you are there" recounting of afternoon conversations spent with the principals.Hugo Vickers, the editor, does an excellent job of stringing together three years worth of notes and reminiscences into an entertaining read. "Treacle?" Well maybe, but it also provides a very personal encounter with people who contributed to a century of history.

I paid $17.99 for a bunch of notes and interviews with obscure eurotrash royals. Does this book add to a general picture of Queen Mary? Not much. Her relatives agree that she was reserved but could be a hoot and that Princess Victoria (George V's sister) was hated by all. And the Windsors were genial hosts. And that Pope-Hennessey was a good houseguest. That's it. I read the whole thing, cover to cover, squinting at the scarce black & white photos (which are very tiny in Kindle). Much of the information has been surpassed by more current bio's of Mary. This was a $3.99 read.

I like James Pope-Hennessy's writing, I'm interested in "royals", and I think Hugo Vickers is terrific -- there just isnt that much new interesting material here. The best of JP-H's stuff was published by Peter Quennell in 1980. But if you love this corner of history, it is well worth having and reading.

When I first saw the book and the name of the author, I couldn't figure out what was going on. Pope Hennessy's biography of Queen Mary is among the greatest biographies every written. She was such a formidable person, but the array of positive observations do not seem slavish. And yet it always seemed clear to me that there was more to the story. This book recounts the notes from interviews held while he was writing the book. The anecdotes and impressions are revelatory and offer a balance to the magisterial portrait.

It assumes a general knowledge of the subject, but put this most unapproachable of royals or historical figures, in a new light. I enjoyed reading his notes about the people he interviewed, which were just as fascinating. My only criticisms - tiny, tiny photos in the Kindle version, and a "dramatic personae' might have been useful, especially when it comes to some of the minor royals.

I enjoyed it. The notes of the author of the official biographer of Queen Mary. Not a lot of juicy tidbits, because her life was not overwhelmed with juicy tidbits.

This book was rather a mixed bag. There were some interesting, even amusing stories......especially the description of the weekend stay with the Gloucesters, amiable but eccentric people....but most were just anecdotes about people now forgotten, except the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Despite this quest, Queen Mary is still somewhat of an enigmatic figure. She was extremely reserved, almost rigid, with an undying loyalty to the concept of monarchy. After reading this book, however, I plan to read the reissued biography as soon as it is available.

Mr. Stafford beautifully shares the adventures of his childhood on the Ivory Coast. His writing is engaging and descriptive. From his personal story and life experience, he gives practical suggestions of how to be a better parent, and how all of us can learn how to love and value children. I was educated in what we really need to understand about poverty, in order to make a difference in it. I loved the chapter where he recounts Bible stories where God used children to accomplish His purposes and of course that can still be true today. A wonderful book. Easy to read. I have purchased 3 more copies to share with family and friends.

This book challenges the way most Americans view children and their role in all areas of society. Through examples taken from the Bible and from lives lived more recently, Dr. Stafford shows that God considers children a vital part of our lives and churches today, and not merely as the 'leaders of tomorrow,' or the 'church of tomorrow.' Stafford grew up as a missionary's kid in a small West African village. That background gave rise to his world view. He urges us to reach a better understanding of how God sees children and offers suggested changes. You will laugh at 14-year-old Stafford's handling of a brash carnival barker. You will cry over stories of abuse. You will wish you had known the people of his village. I know I do. This is an important book. Read, enjoy, share!

heart wrenching, not only about the children he serves but his abuse at the hands of the boarding school for the missionary children. He rose above this horrific abuse and became an amazing advocate for children.

Dr. Stafford's personal style and stories will challenge you and provide a powerful, emotional experience. If you are expecting stories from Compassion International that are focused on trying to squeeze money from you, don't read this book. If you want an honest, deep look into the motivations and stories behind the motivations of a true man of God, then this is the book for you. But don't read this if you aren't willing to allow God to speak into your heart and rattle your convictions.

If you ask any successful person with integrity, "What got you where you are?" they will give you names of influential people who guided and coached them. This book is about touching lives when they are malleable. The measure of a society is seen in how it treats its weakest and most vulnerable members. These are always children. This book is about affecting the future by impacting those who are vulnerable and it is solid gold. This is not a theorist, but a man who has been hurt as a "vulnerable member" and decided to make a difference through forgiveness and action rather than revenge. It works! Many books are good- and forgotten. This one will resonate with you for years to come. If you have children, work with children, love children- read this book.It is truly a gift to be received. I've heard Wes speak and he is 100% genuine.

I read this book to increase my knowledge of how to help those who are poor - especially poor children. While this book met this goal, I was amazed to see how useful these same lessons are to my relatively affluent family and to the children that I see everyday. This book will change your vision of children - almost as radical as looking through the wrong end of a pair of binoculars. Children can seem so small when you look at them the wrong way; Wess Stafford shows us how to turn our binoculars around so we can see how large they really are.

This book challenges traditional thinking about children and brings to light the Biblical importance of not only teaching, but mentoring children.Stafford shows that this takes time together which can be forfeited while participating in segregated ministry. Great insights into the personal tragedy of child abuse, as well.

Amazing story!!!! Good narration! I think authors usually do a bad job reading their own book, but he did a fantastic job and made me cry a few times.
