Amazon.com Review

Every Wednesday, work at Amazon.com--along with just about every other company connected to the fantastical "information superhighway" invented by Vice President Al Gore and actress Hedy Lamarr--grinds to a halt as employees hasten to read the latest issue of The Onion, America's most popular newspaper based in Madison, Wisconsin. But most of the paper's fans have started reading it only within the last few years, and are sadly unaware of The Onion's mighty journalistic legacy. To combat this cultural illiteracy, Editor in Chief Scott Dikkers and his writing staff have assembled this collection of great front pages from the last hundred years. Here is just a sampling of the headlines: A New Century Dawns! McKinley Ushers in Bold New "Coal Age" Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria Boasts: "No Man Can Stop Me" AWESOME! Nation Wowed by Tremendous Hindenburg Explosion Martin Luther King: "I Had a Really Weird Dream Last Night" Clinton Denies Lewinsky Allegations: "We Did Not Have Sex, We Made Love," He Says And those are just the headlines; the stories themselves are all masterpieces of the journalist's trade. Of course, readers with delicate sensibilities may find some of these accounts a bit too risqué, and perhaps even tasteless. (Among the potential offenders: Rosa Parks's decision to "screw this bus shit" and take a cab.) But if you're looking for an antidote to all the 20th-century hoopla promulgated by stuffed shirts like Peter Jennings and Harold Evans--not to mention the best history book since 1066 and All That--then Our Dumb Century is the one for you. --Ron Hogan

From Library Journal

The Onion, a weekly newspaper out of Madison, WI, has established a hugely popular presence online with its laugh-out-loud mixture of sophomoric irreverence and savage satire. This book continues the Onion's missionAfrom 1900 to 2000Awith mock front pages twisting each year's signal events. 1906: "Should U.S. Set Limits on Indian Slaughter?" 1915: "Henry Ford Unveils New Line of Anti-Semitic Autos." 1933: "Stalin Announces Five-Year `Everybody Dies' Plan." 1942: "Ladies, Negroes Momentarily Useful." 1956: "U.S. Sexual Repression Reaches Boiling Point." 1976: "Cambodia to Switch to Skull-Based Economy." 1998: "Drugs Win Drug War." Though some articles will offend the delicate and a few fail to fulfill the promise of the headlines, this is terrific stuff. Even the graphics and asides have bite, like the "Countries Overthrown by the CIA Today" list from a 1964 issue. I wish I was as good with words as these folks are...then maybe I could accurately describe how flat-out hilarious they are. On every page of this fictionalized account of major 20th Century news events there is something that makes me laugh till I cry. Amazing humor. Each page is presented as newsprint from the past decades. Be advised if you're easily offended that this book slaughters sacred cows right and left. But you'll likely laugh even after you get offended.

Yep, hilarious, through and through. Example : New invention ! Tele-vision! For highbrows who are sick of all that mindless drivel on the radio!.Just a fun and quick read that may have you looking up a couple of things on-line if the humor falls flat. The very tiny print is a bit of an issue, be fore-warned.I bought mine used to read in an afternoon, like a magazine, and give away. This is from pre 2000, so a lot of the stuff is very old. That's probably why it is so inexpensive, folks

The ONION's clear masterpiece. Should be in every family library!!

This book is a classic and hilarious. My favorite parts were the early 1900's and up to about WWII. With the benefit of knowing how it all ends, the Onion is able create headlines about Hitler and the British and French which are totally false but are probably what the thinking was at the time.I love the part where Charlie McCarthy and his puppet urged American kids to committ suicide and 75,000 did so.The Onion rips the racist mentality of the early 1900's by overtly promoting the racist attitudes of the country. Of course back then you weren't considered a racist if you held some of those beliefs, but times have changed. The Onion has a hold on what public consensus was during the past and uses that knowledge to create hilarious stories.I recommend this book for anyone with a knowledge of history or for anyone wanting to learn.

this book is great, and about as long as the holy bible, however the writing is very small. you need really good eyesite or get the online version so you can expand text.

Even though this book is nearly twenty years old, it still delivers hilarious satire for events of the 20th century. I find myself looking up the actual events that the book covers and learning a lot. Would absolutely recommend for anyone who loves history/politics/satire.

This is book is a collection of historic headlines with an Onion slant. It's a good read, but the type is very small.

This is the ultimate funny book for me. I'm surprised at how some people find the book to be offensive to liberals. Actually, I find that the book pokes more fun at the right. Anyhow, it's just plain funny. I especially liked the headline "Head Deadhead Dead", and the stuff about Roosevelt, "Fireside Chat Nothing but a Stream of Cuss Words.", and the recurring thread of "France Surrenders". I also liked "Whites Eagerly Await Release of Windows 95". This is one of my favorite books, right up there with "Gray's Anatomy" and the phone book.

Wow!!! What a beautiful calendar! I'm so glad I found this calendar. I had previously been to Provence last summer and bought a sealed calendar of Provence. Upon opening it I found the quality of the photographs early subpar and even ugly. So since I love the Middle East and the history I searched for something interesting and found this calendar. It is gorgeous. Very good quality photos and ancient phrases. I am very pleased with my purchase.

It's a beautiful calendar but why is it still being sold in 2019? I bought this by accident. And now I'm doubling down on my mistake by just relabeling the days of the week, but... it's not optimal obviously! :P I only buy these calendars for the hijri dates and that's gonna be all wrong. Like seriously what's the point of still selling this? Figured I'd leave this review just in case it might tip off another idiot like myself. :)

Beautiful pictures, well-made calendar, excellent overall. I look forward to these every year. The only improvement I could suggest would be a little more info on the pictures, since I always want to know where they were taken and maybe where I can find them again, and maybe the inclusion of more holidays.

Assalaamualaikum,The calendars are clean, serene and beautiful. I have been purchasing them every year since 2010.Are you InshaAllah publishing 2018 calendars soon? Thanks,Irfan

I love these calendars, perfect in almost every way: beautiful photos, inspiring quotes, hijri dates and months, major world holidays. I buy several every year for our family and for gifts. But if only they were made available before the end of the year, that would be perfection!

Kind of disappointed that the calendar's imagery was practically devoid of structures aligned Islam

Excellent photographs as always

Absolutely gorgeous!

Domination and Resistance: The United States and the Marshall Islands during the Cold War

Review

Martha Smith-Norris’s book supplements our collective knowledge about US Cold War activities in the Marshall Islands in many important ways. The sixty-five pages of endnotes and bibliography, as well as many photos in the text, include resources not discussed in other examinations of this topic and bring into clarity large-scale patterns of US behavior. Rather than treat US nuclear weapons testing and US missile testing in the Marshall Islands as two separate activities, the author shows how the missile testing is an evolution of US actions and motivations at its Pacific proving grounds that began with nuclear weapons tests in 1946 and continue with contemporary US activities on Kwajalein Atoll. . . . Smith-Norris brings forward a much-needed focus on the resistance of Marshallese people. Author: Holly Barker Source: The Contemporary Pacific, 29:2 (2017)A welcome addition to the interdisciplinary conversation examining the unequal power dynamics between Marshall Islanders and the United States. . . . Domination and Resistance is a necessary and timely book. The Republic of the Marshall Islands continues to struggle with the legacy of nuclear and ballistic experiments, seeking redress most recently in the United Nations’ International Court of Justice. The Marshallese are now also facing the urgent consequences of climate change: the sea is rising there faster than anywhere else in the world. It is a good thing that scholarly attention to Marshallese environmental and political struggles is increasing. Smith-Norris’s book joins the chorus as an invaluable resource for historians and other scholars, as well as for activists in the work ahead. Author: Collier Nogues, University of Hong Kong Source: Postcolonial Text, 12:2 (2017)Smith-Norris presents a complex and uncomfortable chapter in Cold War history of which most Americans, even students of history, are unaware. . . . Through her analysis of the steadfast, resilient ‘resistance’ by the Marshallese, she offers a valuable context for understanding contemporary US nuclear policies and global missile defense systems. Her work contributes to the field of not only history but international and domestic law, particularly in relation to health, environmental, and financial justice. . . . This significant work should be required reading for both students and policymakers alike. Author: Sylvia Frain Source: Pacific Affairs, 91:1 (March 2018)Smith-Norris adeptly brings the little-understood military history of the Marshall Islands forward into the twenty-first century. And given the current diaspora enabled by the Compact of Free Association and involving more than one third of the island nation's population, her timing is just right. [She] provides a play-by-play of the Marshall Islands bomb testing, illustrating how a sovereign, sustainable tribal North Pacific society was rendered a dependent social welfare state. . . . This book sheds an intense light on the Marshallese and their human rights struggle. Author: Jacqueline Froelich Source: Arkansas Historical Quarterly, 75:3 (Autumn 2016)[T]his is a book about justice. Focused on the . . . atolls of Bikini, Enewetak, and Kwajalein, Domination and Resistance is also a larger, searing history of the Cold War as a global political and strategic phenomenon. . . . [T]he author has done admirable work in pulling together sources and articulating a number of grand arguments about Cold War histories through Micronesian voices. . . . With attention to engaging, not just informing the reader, this book is both a detailed reference and a sobering, scholarly statement on continuing struggles for both history and justice. Author: Matt Matsuda Source: Pacific Historical Review, 86:4 (November 2017)Well-written. . . . [The] book stands out for its focus on the response of the Marshall Islanders to repeated forced resettlements and relocations, lack of compensation or help with survival on islands where life was difficult in exile, medical studies that ultimately outraged even the docile Marshallese, and the lack of action to address festering health and social problems [on] Ebeye Island. . . . The book is meticulously footnoted, with over 60 pages of references to original source material. Author: Giff Johnson Source: The Journal of Pacific History, 53:2Smith-Norris interrupts the field of U.S. foreign relations, which favors top-down realist reconstructions of U.S. global engagements during the Cold War, by focusing on a community often ignored by those narratives. . . . [T]he advantage of Smith-Norris’ text is that it brings together histories of U.S. hegemony and Marshallese resistance in a compact volume that is accessible to new audiences who might not be familiar with the Marshall Islands’ nuclear legacy. Author: Monica Labriola Source: Journal of World History, 28:3-4 (2017)

So far, I've only read the intro and chapters one and two. It is difficult to read.I have several frustrations with the book:1. The author switches back and forth between the anthropology school and the realism school, based on whichever one better supports her argument at that point in the book.2. The author makes wild accusations and assumptions about US goals and interests during the Cold War to support an underlying implication that has US evil intentions 100% of the time.3. The author confuses radiation monitoring with using humans as medical experiment guinea pigs. The accusation is as historically inaccurate as it is irresponsible.4. The author starts with a point that we can all agree on: what happened to the Bikinians was terrible. She ignores the fact that the degree to which it was and is terrible was completely unexpected. She then lists legal cases, several of which were heard or considered by the US Supreme Court. She's clearly not a lawyer and supports the Bikinians every time without examining the cases from a legal perspective. The fact that the Bikinians sue and re-sue for the same reason every time, despite having already won previous cases and received compensation several times is lost on her.5. She ignores the fact that it takes two to tango. The Bikinians *demanded* to return to their island. She blames the US Government for pussyfooting their return, then she blames the US government for not supporting them enough after they returned, then she blames the US government for returning them to a radiation-contaminated island.Update: I resumed reading the book after a long pause. I’m on the Kwajalein chapter now. A few historical inaccuracies to note:1. She erroneously claims 1470 Marshallese were moved from the Mid-Atoll Corridor to Ebeye in the mid-60s. The number was more like 200.2. She quotes rijerbal who claim to feel poorly compensated for the Army’s use of their land. Rijerbal are not landowners in Marshallese society. Landowners were compensated according to predetermined agreement with the TTPI. Also, she quotes their dissatisfaction and cites a UN report from 1961 (the Mid-Atoll Corridor was created in 1964)3. She accurately describes crowded and unsanitary living conditions on Ebeye. She blames these poor conditions on the US missile range but doesn’t explain why the US is to blame for overcrowding or other conditions.4. The original inhabitants of the MAC were compensated, again and again, with money, food, jobs, fuel, and housing. Norris fails to emphasize this important point. The fact is that the Marshallese were permitted to renege on the agreements again and again.5. She correctly states that by the 80s, the national government and local landowners were receiving $9m rent annually from Washington (in 2018 dollars, that’s $27m annually). With that much money, they could have easily fixed the water and sewage problems. But they, like Norris, continued to blame the US.6. She says the US should have allowed Marshallese to shop on the military base, go to the schools, the libraries, the hospital, etc. That’s not done on any military base anywhere. It’s all hubris
