A well researched history of HMC.

Hardback ......... nice quality color pictures ...... a sense of sequence/history of Honda .......... no one book can address all the different details but this is a good start .......

Wonderful book if your a Honda connisour!

Great Book with many pages of information. Another great addition to the collection. Lots of inside information about Mr. Honda I did not know about.

Just glanced at the book so far, I'm happy with the purchase, as a major manufacturer, there aren't that many books covering their history. So I appreciate the chance to increase my library.

This is what a good, accurate, detailed motorcycle book is supposed to be. You get great information and fantastic pictures of original, historically important motorcycles, their riders and the facts that go with them. There is so much speculation these days by people who think they remember what happened, or what a bike was supposed to look like, or when a particular feature was added or changed in a particular model line. This book sets a lot of that straight. It seems the author knows and has spoken personally to the factory racers, mechanics, engineers and competitors to get the information. I got the impression that the author and the historic people themselves were good friends! I got a kick out of the Soichiro Honda quote the first time he rode the great CB 750 in 1969. It really brings characters to life.Jeff Hackett is frequently used as a resource, as he is one of the top authorities on photographing and restoring old Hondas among other motorcycles. Many of the top authorities, authors and restorers have been accessed to create this book. To top it off I get great, color, engine-out photos of the famous RC-166 and RC-160 motors that so much legend has been made of.This all in consideration, the book is not the absolute last word on Honda motorcycles, as many models, specifically US models and some others have been omitted or intentionally left-out. Thankfully, there are other top notch books like that written by Bill Silver that pick up any slack that was omitted herein, but this is the best effort so far at being far better than any "coffee table book" and definitely a must for the restorer or researcher. This is not a re-hashed and fluffed-up "coffee table book", as it is really an up-to-date, detailed history with a bit of myth and legend mixed it for good balance and flow. You should read it end to end; but, you can just as easily flip through it now and then for a "fix" as well. Either way, this is one book you should have in your collection. For the record, I have personally started restoring old Hondas and this book no doubt will pay for itself repeatedly over the years as I take on new projects!

Well written, great photography, well researched sidebars on significant, influential models, more than I expected for the price. Very well done.

Very nice reference book. Glad to have it as an addition to my collection..

Back of the Pack: An Iditarod Rockie' Musher's Pilgrimage to Nome, by Don Bowers

From the Back Cover

Don Bowers has accurately captured this marvelous transformation in Back of the Pack, and has beautifully conveyed the poetry and sense of awe and respect that come with it. He faithfully shows us the joy and work and heartbreak and intensity of learning how to drive dogs, culminating in an incredible journey to Nome in the 1,100-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Before he could make it to the finish line on Front Street, he discovered that he and his dogs were capable of far more than he ever thought possible. Don's story is a true-life example of learning how to "Dream big and dare to fail." Norman Vaughan After reading Back of the Pack you'll watch the rookies heading down Fourth Avenue at the start of the Iditarod with a much better insight. Don draws a clear picture of what it's like to be a neophyte musher. Anyone with an interest in dogs--or who just likes a good read--will thoroughly enjoy it. This may be the best book yet about the Iditarod. Phil Meyer, D.V.M. (20-year Iditarod and Junior Iditarod race veterinarian)

About the Author

Don Bowers lives at Montana Creek, Alaska, in a cabin he built himself. Born in 1948 in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Don is an Air Force Academy graduate with masters degrees from the Air Force Institute of Technology and Alaska Pacific University. For most of his Air Force career he was a C-130 Hercules transport pilot, flying Hurricane Hunters in the Caribbean and Spectre gunships in Southeast Asia as well as "trash haulers" all over Alaska. Don arrived on the Last Frontier in 1975 and became involved with the Iditarod as a member of the volunteer Iditarod Air Force. Upon retirement from the "real" Air Force, Don set about to run the Iditarod with his own team, even though he had virtually no experience as a musher. He is a certified elementary teacher as well as a commercial pilot in Talkeetna during summer. Don is the author of Alaska Airmen's Logbook for Alaska, Northwest Canada, and Russia, published by the Alaska Airmen's Association.

Subtitled, "An Iditarod Rookie Musher's Alaska Pilgrimage toNome", the author, Don Bowers, shares his 1994 and 1995experience in running a team of sled dogs on the 1,100-mile run fromAnchorage to Nome in the race that has been sometimes called the"Last Great Race on Earth." He was 48 years old, a bachelor, with no previous experience in dog mushing. However, he was a pilotwho lived Alaska and had worked as a volunteer in previous races. Heknew many people who had run the race before him and they allencouraged him to do it.Every March, since 1967, between 50 and 80dog sled teams set out on the trail, which can take up to three weeksto complete. Most are not competing for the front-runner prize.Merely finishing the race is a personal goal for many. The trek isdifficult, requiring stamina, endurance and the ability to make quickdecisions in constantly changing conditions. The temperature canvary from 40 degrees above to 65 degrees below zero and there arestorms and flooding, drifting snow and heavy winds. In some placesthe trail plunges down 200 feet or more, twisting between trees and atthe edges of steep drops. At other places, there are long emptystretches over slick icy rivers. The sled often spills, the dogs gettangled and sometimes they find themselves miles and miles off theregular trail.Mostly, they prefer to travel at night when theweather is cooler and the dogs are more comfortable. The musher wearsa single beam headlight if the night is dark. Other times the moonand stars reflect off the snow. And, on rare occasions there is aspectacular display of flashes and colors in the northern sky.Themushers stop at about 20 checkpoints over the course of theirtravels. These are mandatory rest stops which often are no more than atent or a cabin with a place to put a sleeping bag. A few of thecheckpoints are towns with a place to purchase a meal. Mostly though, the musher must rely on the 50 or more large bags of supplies weighing2000 pounds or more which he or she personally packed and had shippedto these checkpoints. This includes huge amounts of food for the 16hungry dogs who must be tended to and rested at each of thesestops. The Iditarod Trail was actually used as a mail route duringthe boom time of Alaska's gold rush. And the dog teams of that daydid not have the advantages of modern technology. There were nohelicopters charting their progress. Or airplanes to fly their foodto various checkpoints. There was little if any shelter. And theconditions for the dogs were certainly not humane.I can't helpthinking of Jack London's "The Call of the Wild" and"White Fang" which depicted the life of a sled dog at theturn of the century. In those days dogs were whipped, beaten withclubs, and often starved as the food they were given had to be huntedfor as the mushers went along the trail. They lived and died in theirharnesses and it was a constant fight for survival.Modern dogs arenever beaten. The dogs are trained to respond to simple verbalcommands and whips are never used. They are well fed and rested andchecked by a vet at every checkpoint. If they are injured they areflown by helicopter to a place they can be cared for. A musher mightstart out with 16 dogs, but is allowed to finish with as little as 7if necessary.I enjoyed the book tremendously, even though DonBowers is no Jack London. This is his first book and he is not aprofessional writer. He's good at descriptions of trail conditionsand details of the race. He's also good at discussing his ownpersonal challenges. I really did empathize with him when a viruskilled some of his dog pups. And I held my breath during his mostscary outdoor challengers. I also have a lot of admiration for hisadaptability and sheer determination to finish, no matter what.Bythe end of the book I had really accepted his style of writing, whichis probably like his personality, which tends to be introspective. Andsometimes I felt he went on a little too long about some detail. Imust say also that I yearned for deeper characterization of the peoplearound him. There was a woman named Lisa and a man named Andy whowere also "back-of-the-packers". They met at checkpointsand helped each other during the long trail. I wanted to know moreabout them and wish he would have included a few personal details anda little characterization.I did get to know his dogs though. Eachone was a distinct and interesting personality. I'll never forget"Socks" one of the leaders, who was able to sense the trailwithout any markers. Or the time the team refused to move because thefemales were in heat. His love for his dogs really came through.Ithank Mr. Bowers for writing the book and definitely recommend it. Ittook me to Alaska, put me right on the sled and made me feel I waspart of it all. Quite a departure for a woman who lives in New YorkCity. It was a great read and I loved being part of the adventure.

I loved reading about the trials and tribulations of getting ready and running the Iditarod. It’s like being on the back of the sled every step of the way. Hated for the book to end.

A very good book if you have a beginner's interest in dog sleds or have ever been intrigued by Alaska, Dog Sleds or the outdoors. The author can be a bit wordy and long winded, particularly in the first half of the book, but it is well worth it anyway. The last half of the book describes the race and his experience in great detail and really puts you there.Easy reading. I couldn't put it down for the last 100 pages.

This is a poignant and entertaining addition to the musher library.

I knew nothing about the Iditarod before reading this. It was easy and fun to read and helped me understand the challenges of the race.

This is a well written book by someone who didn't expect to win, just the love of the race.

My husband loves books on Alaska and the Iditarod and this book was no exception. It kept his interest and that is hard when he does not enjoy reading

He describes his failures, of which there were many, as well as his triumphs. It changed my views towards dog sledding.

The Know Maintenance Perennial Garden, by Roy Diblik

Review

“[Diblik] appropriately starts the book off with chapters on understanding your garden (soil, light, shade), understanding plants (growth habits, flowers, foliage, stems, crowns), preparing and maintaining the site, and some likely plants to consider. Then comes the true treasure—chapter 6 has 62 planting plans, broken down into sun and shade, and then further into themes inspired by successful public plantings (the High Line, “Essence of Piet Oudolf”) or even paintings (van Gogh’s Poet’s Garden).” —Landscape Architecture   “Diblik has codified a naturalistic, yet artistic, approach to building garden beds in the northern tier of North America. Soil composition and amount of sunlight form the starting point to finding a palette of plants sympathetic with a site. Diblik stresses intimate contact with your plants as it allows you to “know” them, the most important aspect of gardening in his opinion. Many inspiring photographs depict the colorful and textural results. Ornamental grasses figure prominently as a foil for the colorful blossoming plants. Themed templates, many titled after Impressionist paintings, will help readers knowingly plan their garden.” —Country Gardens   “A stunning guide to creating nature inspired gardens. . . . Diblik, who supplied many of the plants for the award-winning Lurie Garden at Millennium Park in Chicago, offers up detailed information about 74 sturdy and appealing perennials in a photo-rich reference.” —Chicago Tribune   “Perennial gardeners will appreciate The Know Maintenance Perennial Garden, a book based on the premise that knowing your plants helps you care for them more effectively, with less work.” —Akron Beacon Journal   “Diblik explains the concepts behind self-sustaining plant communities—plants that naturally grow well in harmony and require little maintenance, once established.  With Diblik’s method, you can throw out the mulch, abandon staking, deadheading, the fertilizers and herbicides, the end-of-the-season cleanups.  Instead, you’ll learn to understand how plants grow—their soil, water, and light requirements—and the easy ways to get what you want. . . . A wonderful book for homeowners and designers alike—it definitely belongs on your bookshelf.” —Garden Design Online   “A straightforward, easy-to-follow guidebook for planting design success, suitable for the homeowner and professional alike.” —The Designer “A book for thinking gardeners who really want to take the time to know their plants and understand how their plants live and work together as a sustainable community. Armed with this knowledge, gardeners will be free to actually spend time enjoying their gardens.” —A Garden of Possibilities   “If you’re dreaming of a low-maintenance, lush, perennial garden this spring, then Roy Diblik’s new book should be your planting bible. It provides dozens of fresh, detailed plans and gorgeous color photographs of easy-care yet stunningly artistic gardens.” —Garden Variety News   “The first half of the book covers site preparation, planting, care, maintenance, and of course, key plants for the author’s ‘know maintenance’ system. Diblik shows you how to reduce garden chores to only minutes a week. You will learn when to plant and water, and how to weed strategically.” —Michigan Gardener   “Diblik gives plant combination advice to make his lower maintenance, sustainable, and environmentally friendly technique work well and provide beauty year round.” —Journal Times   “The nuts and bolts of success with perennial flowers along with 62 sample garden designs and 74 high-performing, low-care perennial plants.” —Patriot-New

Elsewhere, you'll need to translate his plant palette and redesign each plan. Plans are depicted as planting grids, in overhead view only. The absence of a ground-level view showing height and form makes visualization difficult, especially if you are not familiar with the plants. No photographs of executed plans (although for me that's not a showstopper). As an amateur, I was unable to browse through the plans to quickly narrow down which I might have further interest in. Instead I will need to work through each to get an idea of the ground-level view.On the Kindle, the font size for some of the plan legends is too small to read. Fortunately because the symbol used for each plant is consistent across all plans, it should eventually be possible to figure them all out. (There doesn't appear to be a key showing all the symbols in one place, and even if there were, on the Kindle it would be a pain to flip back and forth. I'll need to create my own key.)The most valuable contribution of this book to my admittedly novice-level knowledge was an insight into how a designer thinks about plants (as a living, multi-dimensional palette) and the patterns that can be developed in a design. The author's advocacy of developing an intimate knowledge of each variety of plant you work with covering all seasons through the years of its development is both inspiring and daunting. There is much to be gained from a study of this book, but it won't come easily.

Rarely has a garden book inspired me to actually make grand changes to my gardens. This book inspired me and gave me the tools needed to make the changes. There are already many excellent reviews here. I think most of the reviews for positive and negative aspects of this book are very fair, and true. This is not a "gardening 101 for idiots" book. You do have to read the book, and study the plans and the pictures. Sometimes you have to go back and forth in the book to find an answer to your immediate question. However, I find Diblik to be a true teacher and if you do "work" with his book, you will come away with the ability to make your own plan that fits into your own garden. One of the reasons that I give this book 5 starts is because it IS a new way of creating a bed, it IS ground-breaking and different than the million garden books we have on our shelves already from the last 50 years. If you think of this as WORKbook for helping you design a bed, I think you'll be very satisfied with this book. You don't have to cookie-cut his plans. I was able to use his ideas and meld them into my existing beds that are not open fields a la Diblik and a la Oudolf. Much of my yard is already established with shrubs/trees/perennials that I do not want to move. If you study his many garden plans (that have no pics), you start to see patterns in how he does his plantings. There are MANY photos in this book, plenty of them will give you the knowledge you need to imagine how these plans might look. He's showing you HOW makes the plans. It would be impractical and impossible to have pics of all of them. (One of the criticisms). Instead, he's sharing his process...how you can take a community of well-chosen plants and use them in endless flexibility to create a special garden, all your own. And, let me say that here in Wisconsin I was able to find many of his recommended plants on clearance in the fall. Fall is a perfect time to plant a garden in most areas of the country. You can save A LOT of money on grasses, etc, by buying them on clearance when everyone else is ignoring the garden centers. The types of plants Diblik recommends are often on steep clearance in autumn: grasses, salvias, nepetas, etc.

As a long-time gardening "putter-er" with an interest in native plants and naturalistic plantings, but with little skill in garden design and plant relationships to each other I found the overall concepts introduced in this book helpful. I am familiar with Roy Diblik's name from the Lurie Garden in Chicago and his work with Piet Oudolf. I read Oudolf's book "Planting: A New Perspective" before reading Know Maintenance. I appreciate Diblik's simple approach in helping me understand the concepts.Where the Know Maintenance book falls short, for me anyway, are in the accompanying visuals to the text in Chapter 5 ("Key Plants") and Chapter 6 ("The Garden Designs"). The written profile of each of the key plants and the role of sedges and bulbs is helpful. Also helpful is Diblik's "First Date" plant combinations (e.g. Allium "Summer Beauty" 40%; Sesleria autumnalis, 60%). Unfortunately each picture of the plant profile shows it combined with a different plant than mentioned in the "First Date" combinations. In the prior example, the photo of Summer Beauty is shown paired with an Echininea cultivar not with Sesleria autumnalis. This is very frustrating and not helpful to the novice who needs to be able to have a visual of how the plant combinations look together. Some of the photo captions are incorrect (i.e. Monarda bradenburiana photos/captions). Similarly, in Chapter 6 ("The Garden Plans"), Diblik provides a 2 dimensional matrix layout of plants. It would be nice to see how these plants look in the design through a photograph. For the spatially and visually challenged, visuals are necessary! Timber Press did a poor editing job. It should insist that their gardening books are not simply full of glossy picture to sell books but edit it from the perspective of a reader. Meh.That said, I'm glad I bought the book. Over the months I continue to reach for it time and time again as I try to use the knowledge in my own evolving garden. I did get a long-handled diamond hoe to help with routine weeding.
