Review

"Fascinating.... Like The Turn of the Screw, the novel opens irresistibly, when a young woman with a troubled past gets an enigmatic posting in a remote place.... Heartbreaking and transcendent and almost religious in itself."―Sarah Lyall, New York Times"A fine, fact-based historical novel, an old-school page turner...Donoghue has written, with crackling intensity, about [spirituality's] power to destroy."―Stephen King, New York Times Book Review"[Donoghue's] contemporary thriller Room made [her] an international bestseller, but this gripping tale offers a welcome reminder that her historical fiction is equally fine."―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"Outstanding.... Exploring the nature of faith and trust with heartrending intensity, Donoghue's superb novel will leave few unaffected."―Sarah Johnson, Booklist (starred review)"Donoghue demonstrates her versatility by dabbling in a wide range of literary styles in this latest novel.... The closely imagined, intricately drawn story possesses many of the same alluring qualities as her bestseller, Room. .... Donoghue's engrossing novel is loaded with descriptions of period customs and 19th-century Catholic devotional objects and prayers...[and] asks daring questions about just how far some might go to prove their faith."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Donoghue is known for her bestselling novel, Room.... [But] she is also well versed in historical fiction. THE WONDER brings together the best of all, combining a gracefully tense, young voice with a richly detailed historical setting."―The Millions"Readers of historical fiction will gravitate to this tale."―Mary Ann Gwinn, Seattle Times"A riveting allegory about the trickle-down effect of trauma."―Megan O'Grady, Vogue"Donoghue poses powerful questions about faith and belief all the while crafting a compelling story and an evocative portrait of 19th-century Irish provincial society."―Tom Beer, Newsday"Donoghue's superb thriller will keep readers hanging on to every word, pondering how far one will go to prove her faith."―Liz Loerke, Real Simple

The Wonder by Emma Donoghue is a masterfully written mystery, and the detective is a young English nurse who has been hired to come in as an outside observer to determine the validity of the claim of a rural Irish family that their eleven year old daughter has taken no food for four months, and yet, is miraculously thriving. This nurse, Lib, expresses well the prejudices of the English towards the Irish and their beliefs. (The novel takes place not long after the end of the Great Potato Famine, and so there are intense feelings between the two cultures.) The focus of the story is on a young girl, Anna, who is seen locally as being specially blessed by God, and yet, as the story unfolds we come to see that she represents a perfect storm of pressures arising from devotion to God and religious fanaticism, love of family and family dysfunction. Lib, as a well-trained nurse, arrives with total skepticism, assuming that the child herself is perpetuating this hoax, but Anna's simplicity and purity of heart gradually win Lib over. The challenge then becomes: How to keep this child alive? As with all good mysteries, just about every character has ulterior motives of one kind or another to want the phenomena to be real... the priest, the doctor, the innkeeper, the parents. It is only the trust that slowly builds between Lib and Anna that creates a ray of hope. So much happens towards the end of the book that I was transfixed. The book gave me much to ponder about how children are influenced, for good or ill, by those around them. After finishing it, I immediately went back to read the last three chapters again so I could better appreciate all that contributed to Anna's dire situation. I happen to be a child psychologist, so these issue matter to me, but I think Donoghue's novel will have wide appeal. This is a very worthwhile read.

This book is a delight to read on so many levels. The story is compelling and interesting and the writing is very good. In addition to containing a disturbing mystery, the novel poses questions about medical ethics and morality. A good book makes you think and I am still thinking about this one a few days after finishing. The story is set in southern Ireland in 1859, over the period of two weeks. Lib is a widow who became a nurse after her husband of one year died. She was a Nightingale, as in trained by Florence, and was working in a hospital in England after the Crimea War. Her matron suggested Lib travel to Ireland to be a nurse in the O’Donnell household for two weeks. She agrees, but nothing is as she anticipated. Lib has been hired by a committee of townsfolk to “observe” 11 year old Anna O’Donnell for two weeks. The child has not eaten in 4 months and the committee wants to know if this is a hoax or divine intervention as the family claims. The child reports that she receives manna from heaven. People come from all over to see the devoutly religious miracle child. Lib and a local nun are to take shifts and simply observe to see if the child is taking in any food. Lib is out of place in Catholic Ireland and is convinced that the whole thing is a trick. She is a firm believer in facts and science and has nothing but disdain for religion. As she spends time with Anna, an unlikely friendship develops. Lib remains very skeptical of the family and some of the townspeople. She is befriended by a newspaper reporter sent there to cover the story. Together, they begin to discover the horrible truth. As Anna’s health begins to fail, Lib begs the local physician and the committee to end the watch period and intervene. She soon discovers that everyone has their own agenda, including building up the local church if Anna is declared a saint. Lib knows that she needs to act fast, but she is torn between duty and love. There are so many lovely layers to this novel. The characters have hidden secrets, some of them quite horrifying. It is chilling to learn how far people will go to further their own desires. Far enough to endanger the life of a child and to convince her that she is doing the right thing by starving herself. There are themes of guilt, family loyalty, the goodness and dangers of religion, misperceptions and assumptions, and medical and moral ethics. The story is a slow burn that builds to some startling conclusions. The book is hard to put down and well worth your time.

Words can't to do this story justice. Personally, I do not enjoy nineteenth century writing. Nor do I find reading Irish, British or other forms of European English dialects; only because the vocabulary is difficult for me which causes me to stutter in my reading. However....this book had me hooked and I was able to overcome my shortcomings. The revelations were so intriguing and surprising! You have to read this beautiful written book!

*Original review on Goodreads & My Blog*I can't even begin to explain how much I love these books and characters ❤️Drizzt & Guenhwyvar ♥My wonderful Wulfgar ❤️The sharp tongued and awesome Bruenor Battleaxe ❤️The lovely and bad to the bone Cattie-Brie ❤️I love Regis too. 😊These friends do everything for each other, even die if they have to and I never want to see that day come 😫The ending was so sweet. Wulfgar and Cattie-Brie. Bruenor ruling over his home again. And we shall see with Drittz, he's never sits long and he has his own thoughts and worries of the world. And Guenhwyvar is by his side once again ❤️I want to leave it with a funny little excerpt. Bruenor and Cattie-Brie are riding a fiery chariot through the sky to quickly get to their friends and help.EXCERPT* The silver dragon rolled over onto its back lazily, riding the morning winds with its legs-all four- crossed over it and its sleepy eyes half closed. The good dragon loved its morning glide, leaving the bustle of the world far below and catching the sun's untainted rays above the cloud level But the dragon's marvelous orbs popped open wide when it saw the fiery streak rushing at it from the east. Thinking the flames to be the forerunning fires of an evil red dragon, the silver swooped around into a high cloud and poised to ambush the thing. But the fury left the dragon's eyes when it recognized the strange craft, a fiery chariot, with just the helm of the driver, a one-horned contraption, sticking above the front of the carriage and a young human woman standing behind, her auburn locks flying back over her shoulders. Its huge mouth agape, the silver dragon watched as the chariot sped past. Few things piqued the curiosity of this ancient creature, who had lived so very many years, but it seriously considered following this unlikely scene. A cool breeze wafted in then and washed all other thoughts from the silver dragon's mind. "Peoples," it muttered, rolling again onto its back and shaking its head in disbelief.END EXCERPT*Happy Reading!Mel ❤️

Long ago and faraway when I was reading fiction full time with lots of SF and Fantasy I read one of the Drizzet "Forgotten Realms" series as an impulse buy off the bookstore shelf. I liked it but did not follow up, maybe I got confused on the series numerology or whatever. Now in 2019, reading almost all non-fiction, and like many people under pressure from day to day BS I have found this a relaxing diversion. You have to be impressed with the world building and Drizzet is an excellent traditional hero with a strong moral code which as a parent now I appreciate versus the slasher/psycho genre. That being said this particular book I did not feel was the strongest but I have decided I am in for the long haul even if it means paying full pop for the Kindle edition. I do not need another bookshelf full of an SF series paperbacks. cares about.

These books rely on the same tropes ever and over again. How many fake deaths can a reader take? How many flashing scimitars or people looking on in awe of Drizzt's fighting ability can someone read about before getting bored? The love is too pure, the hate too vile, and the good too virtuous. Every character in these books is an archetype that rarely deviates or acts with real human emotion. Other than that, the story is alright, and for D&D fans, it's fun watching the rules come to life in a narrative.

I bought this book to replace a soft copy to complete my collection of all 33 volumes. Salvadore's books are great. I especially like Drizzt's musings. The huge detailed story line interwoven with other parts of Faerun including stories, maps, etc. also make for a fun read.

The story takes off immediately where the last book ended and in truth the story feels more like the second half of of what was in truth one book. In any case there is a great deal of humor, thrilling action, friendship, and inner struggle.

Unlike so many the story of Drizzt never grows stale for me. In this book you see what friendship really means to Drizzt and the others. You get to watch a love grow between cattibrie and Wulfgar and the masses love between Drizzt and cattibrie. Read as they put it all on the line to save a friend. Will the make there in time to save Regis and will Drizzt be able to face his mirrored reflection the assassin he might of been. Then read on and lose your self in this fantastic continuation of the story of Drizzt Do'Urden.

I know it's much more than a trilogy, but in my mind I still see it that way, and The Halfling's Gem ties up this batch of stories perfectly. It's a thrill ride through new sights, sounds and emotions that carries readers across valuable life lessons in loyalty, discrimination, honor and even mercy. The characters are developed so completely they quickly become lifelong friends. It's great for anyone 11yrs and up due to the types of violence, magic and ethics.

Book 1 of the Legend of Drizzt series, Homeland, was a hard read at first with the long complicate names but once I got past that I really liked it and decided to keep reading. I've now read 25+ books from RA Salvatore and would recommend all Legend of Drizzt, Hunters Blade, Transitions, and Neverwinter books as great fantasy reads. Salvatore has such great character development and interesting new adventures that make you want to keep reading. There is a fair amount of fighting, if you're not into that I'd still recommend these books, just read through those parts fast.

There was no alto sax part with the music. Just the piano part.

Item as described

Everything was there that needed to be.

Good music

Alto saxophone part missing

Really awesome piece!

I had two students order the Creston Sonata and it only came with the piano part and no solo saxophone sheet music. Isn't there supposed to be a saxophone solo part that comes with it?
